I'm feeling my age...Help!!!

Started to play alot more golf lately, my son is real interested in the game...I was wondering what are some basic exercises or weight training you are doing to help keep the golf game in order....I am now in my mid 40's and feeling the pinch I have lost some yardage in my game and looking to keep up with average distances (150 yd 7 iron) Any suggestions would be most appreciated...

Andy

Yoga. It will really strengthen you and increase your flexibility and balance. The flexibility and balance will really help your golf swing.

I do not train, but before each game I try and stretch for at least 10 minutes, I find this helps with distance. If I'm cold (no stretching), forgetboutit!

I just got back into golf this year too and am also in my mid-40's... I don't do any strength training, but plan to at least start working more on stretching. During a lesson I just took, the pro informed me that a simple way to stretch was simply to swing my club a few times like a baseball bat, in order to get blood flowing in my spine and back. He says to repeat this anytime you go more than 4 minutes without taking a shot. He also suggests we simply take one bite from an energy bar and one sip of water after every shot - and avoid eating at the turn.

There is a ton of instruction on the internet on golf fitness if you want info on stretching or strength training specificially for golf. Here's an article I found on stretching which includes a few photos:

Stretch for success - pga.com, Mike Pedersen

I played recently with the General Manager of a local course, who is also about our age. He thinks the key to playing golf as we age is flexibility (body and mind), not necessarily strength. His only form of fitness training involves yoga.

Enjoy playing with your son! Mine is now 20 and too busy with work and school to join me.

You say that you've been playing a lot more recently. I presume this follows a period of relative golf inactivity ? There is no reason to be losing distance at your age. Stretching will help. Consistant solid contact will help more... not saying that you aren't already doing that, mind you. I suppose certain exercizes and weight training might help too. I'm 50 and I've never been long but I hit everything the same distance, sometimes longer, as I ever have.

your question got me more interested too... I just found this book on yoga for golfers and found a local instructor near me who I'm now planning to feature at my website and take classes from.

I've been using this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/087...83155&v=glance

I really enjoy it, and get a good workout out of it. It has options on each pose for beginners and experts alike.

I sure know nothing about yoga ( I thought it was a cartoon bear ! ) but I just want to throw my 2 cents in here when it comes to age. I just turned 60 and this is a definate fact I am hitting the ball longer ( and straighter ) than I did 30 years ago. I just came through six months of playing and more time on the practice tee than I ever have spent in my days of golf. Its' technology my friend, no doubt about that, shafts, clubhead material and balls, sure excersise is great but its' practice, practice, practice combined with the fabulous technology thats' available in the golf world these days. I want to mention something that may pertain to your situation, this thing about distance. When I started playing again this year I got together with my pro. we were working on distance and ball flight. Although I felt I was taking a full backswing I was far from it ( as the video showed ) as we get that wee bit older we can lose that ability to make that big shoulder turn. I worked on it ( not too easy at first ) and finally got into the position that my pro. wanted me to be in, hands up over the right shoulder and my back to the target, the difference in distance was amazing. Stretching exercises will definately help, good luck.

buteman, you're an inspiration! However, I'd still give more credit to your improved swing than to your use of new technology ;).

Buteman I totally agree with the technology and lessons approach but in order to get to those desired positions my body needs some tuning up...by the way spent about 30 minutes on the floor last night going thru some of these yoga positions and if any one out there thinks this stuff is easy think again...it did loosen up my lower back and hamstrings allowing me to work out with the meticus and go thru my swing positions...feeling better will continue to update..

thanks,
Andy

I think you've mis-interpreted wb4tjh. According to his profile, he's 59 and had the same reaction as this soon-to-be 51 Y/O when he read about a 40-something starting to feel his age.
