The latest from the USGA on drivers is that they are going to put a limit on MOI….or in other words…forgiveness. Nike has the new SQ out and it has a very large profile still with in the 460cc limit set by the USGA. However they have stretched the head to the back making it very forgiving. The USGA has said that there will be a limit on how much you can do that. I forgot what that limit is but the SQ is just 10% below the limit.
So you can assume a few things here. First is that Nike is on to something with their new driver and Second: that the USGA is on another crusade…now that the distance one has been beat down…… to regulate what is already a hard game for us hacks. I just don’t see a bunch of Pro’s wanting a very forgiving driver that they can’t shape a shot with. So this MOI thing will just hurt the working mans golfer.
They need something to keep themselves occupied, and to make it look like they've still got a purpose.
Frankly I don't see this as a threat to the integrity of the game or anything like that, the fact is - as you said Scott1s - it will just make the game harder for the rest of us.
I have to disagree with you guys. I think drivers have gotten way way way too big. 460 is too large. It's practically cheating. I say let's go back a little, back to 400cc, no larger. What's the point of having drivers so big? To make the game that easy to play? So the drivers can drive you to the store after a round? Oversize is one thing. Mega-Ultra-KingKong size is too much.
There should be a PGA tournament where the largest driver is 260-300cc's. Then you'll see who can really play the game.
That's just one element of the game Bill, I'd put money on Tiger, Vijay and Phil that they'd be in the top-5 in money if you required those cc's on the PGA Tour.

At the Pro level your right.....it is the Indian because they all have perfect arrows for thier game. What the USGA is doing is trying to save the mythical score called "Par". It is like the world will end if hacks ever get near par.
I agree with that to a degree though. If at the Pro Level a player doesn't keep up with what the technological advances are in either shafts, golf balls, drivers, you name it. He's giving away an edge. I think it's more of matching the right arrow to the Indian.
How about you give Tiger Woods an R-flex Taylor Made 300 and see how well things go for him on the tee.

YMMV..........
There was a time in the not-so-distant past that 300 cc's was "King Kong." The game of golf is always evolving and the equipment evolves right along with it. For instance, earlier today I read in another thread that there's a new golf shoe that will increase distance with your long irons!
Even with the new super large clubs and extra forgiving irons, the average handicap still hasn't gone down any. Yeah, they're making the drivers more forgiving, but you still have to hit it straight! Also, more people would hit it on the screws if the average length of drivers was shorter; say 44". All the technology in the world isn't going to help a golfer who hits the ground before the ball, no matter what the size head.
I really wonder where club technology is going to go now that the driver face, MOI, clubhead size, and shaft length have been capped. I just don't see anymore major advances. There will always be pretty new clubs out on the market, but I seriously doubt that any will be revolutionary.

I've definitely thought about what you're saying...this will put the marketing people on the spot more than ever to create that "BEST EVER" model...I've always laughed at how they always keep coming out with the "New Improved"...does that now mean the one two years ago isn't any good now? But that was the "Best ever made"....LOL
