penalties and strokes
....recently playing golf with my neighbors , I hit a ball that landed right next to a chain link fence, about 3 inches from the fence itself. What should I have done? I moved the ball a club length away from the fence, but did not take a one stroke penalty. Should I have taken a one stroke penalty?? Or what?

It all depends one one thing .... if the fence itself is an OB line , you must play it as it lies or take a stroke unplayable drop . If it is not an OB line , it is an immovable obstruction and you get a free drop .
