I was just browsing the news and saw an article about the history of golf. It went on to say that the Chinese played the game a thousand years ago. The Scots played the game in the 1500s but the Chinese were already playing it in 945. They called it chuiwan. Chui means to hit and wan means ball. There are some antique paintings which show aristocrats hitting a ball into a hole with clubs. The paintings are being displayed in Hong Kong. Interesting stuff...

The Chinese make a lot of these outrageous claims that have no backing. I saw an article the other day that said they found a map from the 1300s that had North and South America and Antartica. The Chinese are full of it sometimes.
I read somewhere that they invented the internet in 1949.
You've got my curiosity...I've got to check out that website. Do you think they are always hitting to a red flag? And something else...PING has always sounded kinda Chinese to me.
The Chinese people are a very creative and innovative people, but since the communists have come into power, they seem to have claimed to have invented just about everything. I give the ancient Chinese credit for paper, the compass and gunpowder, but if you believe the lies of the present regime they probably even invented water and discovered fire.

I'm sure there were games similar to golf in several cultures throughout time. I think the Scots probably should be credited for the beginnings of golf as it's played now.

Chuiwan, eh? You sure it's not an internet joke...
Man one: What chuiwan to do today?
Man two: I don't know. Chuiwan go hit a ball with a stick?
Man one: Where chuiwan me to hit it?
Man two: Into that hole.
Man one: What chuiwan? There must be at least 18 of them!
Man two: Chuiwan play or chuiwan go home to wife and child!?
Man one: Chuiwan be quite? I'm trying to hit the ball now.
Man two: Chuiwan know what? You picked your head up!
To me, also... wouldn't be surprising if similar games evolved independently in several different cultures. And, that the direct ancestor of the game we play is the one that originated in Scotland.
Like hitting a ball into a hole is is some novel concept. Most sports involve getting a ball into some kind of goal (football, basketball, hockey (puck), pool, soccer, water polo, etc.) I mean, who hasn't invented golf? Now to formalize the game, make up rules and introduce etiquette, that is inventing golf.
The Chinese invented Chuiwan, not golf. Unless they want to claim they brought it west to Scotland at some point and showed them how to play, the Scots invented the version of hitting a ball into a hole called golf!
And by the way, we all know Al Gore invented the internet.
