During Hurricane Katrina I was exiled to the Ft. Lauderdale area and got to experience lots of golf there. I think there is a golf course per square mile there, so there is a lot to choose from.
I personally played 6 courses in the area - TPC at Heron Bay, Jacaranda (East), Hillcrest, Bonaventure (West), Colony West, and Palm Beach National. All these courses are north of Ft. Lauderdale in the Sunrise/Tamarac/Plantation area. They are all fine courses. The ones I didn't play but wanted to - Inverrary, Deer Creek, Bonaventure (East), Jacaranda (West) and The Diplomat. I spoke to lots of people while there about the better courses in the area, and the responses I got were usually Jacaranda and Bonaventure. Neither of them will break the bank. Don't let the TPC thing fool you - that course isn't all it's cracked up to be (why do you think the PGA Tour moved?). Sand, sand and more sand. Not terrible, but not on the must play list. Palm Beach National is a bit of a drive, but not a bad layout (until the last 2 holes at least...). If you have the time and don't mind the drive, Crandon Park at Biscayne is a Champions tour stop and supposedly very fine. If you don't mind giving up an organ, there's always Doral in Miami too.
There are lots of choices. The ones I played were all very nice. Hillcrest just had some work done, too. Check Golf954.com, as well as Lastminutegolfer.com for specials.

I'll second the sand notion at Heron Bay. The goes beyond well bunkered to nearly being a few patches of grass on sand. Fortunately the day I played it the wind was minimal and I managed to stay out of the sand the entire round. IF, and its a BIG IF, you can place your shots well and stay out the bunkers Heron Bay isn't an overly difficult course.
That was what everyone in the business said about Heron Bay, not real difficult, lots of sand. I just had to see it for myself. They were right. Not real windy when I played either, but the course was a bit damp from recent rains (although many other area courses weren't nearly as bad...).

Good report, I used to live on the east course at Jacaranda so I know the area well.
As stated above, these are all fine courses. Deer Creek, Jacaranda(East and West), Bonaventure(Green monster), Inverrarry, and the Diplomat. Any of these courses would be good to play. I would recommend Deer Creek the highest of the group. (That hurts to say, I used to be a member at Jacaranda)
To this list I would add the Cypress or Oaks course at Palm Aire.(Oaks is the better of the two) Both are nice courses. Carolina Club in Margate is nice also.(not as good as Deer Creek, and around the same price) If you want to drive about 80 miles, play the PGA courses(North, South, and Dye courses are good).
North of Boca Raton and South of Palm Beach, there is a course named Emerald Dunes, that is one of my favorite courses in the area. Emerald Dunes would be my recommendation, but it has now gone private. The Boca Raton Municipal course isn't bad, but not the same caliber as the courses mentionsed above.
Heron Bay isn't worth the money unless you play in the middle of the summer. Crandon Park is another good course, but you better have your A game, and you will get eaten alive by bugs if you play any other time than the winter. Doral isn't worth the money, unless you just want to play the Blue Monster.
If you would like more info about any of these courses, you can PM me.

Nice, OSU Dan! Carolina was next on my list of to plays, after Deer Creek. My future mother-in-law lives in Tamarac, so I'll be down there again and get to play the ones I missed before. Saw a lot about Palm-Aire, but couldn't get a solid read on it for quality. I'm not a great golfer by any stretch but why waste money on courses that aren't too great, you know? Good on the Oaks; I'll have to add that one to the list.
