My game is falling apart...
Since the day I took up the game six years ago...I've always been a very consistent ball striker, particularly with my irons. In fact the worst part of my game was Driver, 3W, and bunker shots in that order. In the last year I've got my Driver working and with the recent change to the Nike Ignite I've not lost my accuracy and have increased my distance off the tee by nearly 25 yards.
So what's wrong you ask? My iron game has come unglued. With the long irons I don't seem to be having a problem but inside of 120 I am completely falling apart. Today I shot a 90 and had it not been for the added distance off the tee and a pretty good day putting I likely would have been ready to jump in the lake. In going back through my score card I found 10 shots that were completely uncharacteristic of my iron game and three or four that were mental mistakes (i.e. wrong club based on the lie, etc.).
You take out half of those and I hit my handicap on the number. You take out all of them and give me my old iron game back and I shoot a 76 or 77.
I am so frustrated right now and I don't see it improving dramatically until I get comfortable with the swing change (i.e. maintaining my left knee flex and improving the flexibility between the hips and shoulders). Granted, the iron problems started several months ago and should be easy to fix. The biggest problem I am having is consistency in distance. My normal PW is 105-115. Today I had a 105 to the center and gave it a nice easy swing with the PW and it went 140 yards. I also had a 140 to carry the front edge of the green on another hole...a typical 8I and I hit it closer to 160. On the flip side I had two shots from 125-130 range and hit 9I only to have them fall 20 yards short.
Needless to say I just needed to vent...its such a fickle game.
