i quit my local mens golf association because of this. its kinda defeating to play a so called 16 handicapper that shoots a 76 when it comes to tournys. i can shoot below par and be taken out. now of course these things are flighted but non the less its just plain dumb to see that junk up on the score board at the end. what makes it worse is the sandbagger just playing it up to "the best round of my life" when the same thing happened last mth, and the mth before that. yet no one says anything about it.
its amazing what golf, a gentlemans game, can bring out in a person.
I played in a company day where the maximum handicap was 24. One guy picked a fight with the organisers saying he always played off 28 and had a good sulk when he was told to play off 24. When he won with 48 points, no one applauded.

Seen both sides of this.
Once in an 'Open Day' saw a 24 Hcp shoot 72 (+2) and his home club didn't pull him.
Also an ex County player whose handicap lapsed was given a new one of 6 after a 5 year lay off (Marriage & Kids), he was embarrassed when he shot level in an 'Open Day'.
Doesn't necessarily moan a lot, but yeah. Cheats his/hey way through golf tournaments that calculate net scores by posting a handicap much higher than that he/she really plays off of. They get to be a real nuisance (and worse) when you come up against one.
I spent a long time when my handicap was alot lower than the scores I was shooting, but was actually powerless to do anything because the handicap system doesnt have an allowance for this eventuality!
An 'irksome' topic, to be sure. You have to wonder what the thought process is. What kind of accomplishment is it to feign hacker status to achieve tainted glory? Can anyone actually be proud of that? OK...I guess I could if they were giving away a car or a super model, or even a bucket of extra crispy chicken. Never mind. I've answered my own question.
Sandbaggers is the reason I stick to gross score tourneys. If I play in a net tournament with a group of 18 handicaps they win every time. I always say the scariest person in golf is one with an 18 handicap.....anything could happen.
Thats why my group of weekend golfers (about 25 of us (and one gal) never ever use handicaps in our games. We all have 14 clubs and 2 arms and 2 legs so it's even steven from there. Players beware.
Also in friendly matches with folks outside of our group I will never take or give strokes.

Not if they are truly an 18. I'd agree that the scariest person in golf is one who claims to be an 18 ("Oh I play bogey golf, make me an 18").

Handicap- that's how many beers your friend has to drink over the course of a round before you are comparable, right? That would make me about a 0, but I always "sandbag" to about 10-12 anyways.
