from the back tees. I'm a 2 , but I really think I would struggle to get under 85, even though, I posses some length.
The greens , the tricky lies would just kill the 1st time around ... and maybe for a few rounds afterwards.
I would shoot 87 the 1st time ..... but would also die for the chance and enjoy every minute of it
I'm off 11 and I'm fairly confident I would break 100. As you mentioned the first time would be a struggle as you wouldn't have a clue as to where you should put the ball on the greens
I think I would shoot in the mid 80s. If I knew I was playing there, I would find the fastest private course greens around here to practice on, so I wouldn't be playing hockey on the Augusta greens.
I feel pretty confident that I can shoot low 80's pretty much anywhere. Now, if the course is set up like it is in the tournament, I'm thinking I'll shoot around 90.
I'm an 11, and from the pro tees I don't think I'd break 100! We're talking tournament-slippery greens and no local knowledge. I've seen seasoned pro's shoot in the 80's at Augusta!
But it would be one of the best 100+ rounds of my life.
i wouldn't even keep score....the beauty of the place and the walking of the fairways traveled by the best in the world through history....who cares what you shoot. heck i'd be tempted to play a 5 iron the whole way around just to spend more time there.......(okay, not really with the 5 iron thing, but i would just love to walk the same grass as those before me)
I'm actually playing Augusta next week, a friend of mine has this guy who knows Bob Sacamano..........ok just teasing you guys, LOL. I'm a 13 and probably would shoot 110.
Just a bit OT.... My golf coach in high school back in the early 1970s regularly shot in the low to mid 70s. He had the opportunity to play Oakland Hills. He played from the tips and shot an 89. He said it was one of the best rounds of golf he'd ever played.
They (Augusta) has done away with the old tees and the new ones measure out at 7400+ yards. Add to that greens that have so many tricky spots and speeds regularly faster than 12 or 13. The course is easily 20 shots tougher than what many of us play on.
I don't care if your scratch on your local course...that course would put into perspective the large delta between a scratch player and the PGA guys.
To say that you could normally shoot in the 80's or that your a 2 at your local club and would shot in the mid-80's at Augusta is completely ridiculous unless you plan to play from the forward (Members) tees that only measure 6200 yards.
Let me give you a lis of the guys who have scored in the 80's the last two Master's:
Zach Johnson, Ben Curtis, Rory Sabbatini, John Daly, Shigeki Maruyama (twice), Thomas Bjorn, Brian Davis, Colin Montgomerie, Tim Clark, Tim Herron, Fred Funk, Adam Scott.
Do you honestly believe you've got enough game to hang with the above guys at Augusta or on any other course for that matter?
You forget one very big difference between tournament golfers and we low handicappers.
We would not be trying to birdie each hole so could go fairway - green, two putt, par, or a couple of 3 putts until we knew the greens.
I would be upset to go over 80 after a couple of practice rounds, even off the tips but I wouldn't expect to beat par for at least 6 months playing 3 x's per week.
I'll tell you in late May. I just got my long awaited call for to be a gallery guard. I am to show up Saturday at gate 6 to get my access badge and buy 2 practice round tickets for Monday - Wed. We don't get paid anything but the reward for all the hard work is we get to play in May. Oh Happy Happy, Joy Joy
SuperTiger18, what do you think you would shoot at Augusta?
Probably 120 or 130. I am a 12 handicap and know the difference between the courses I play and those on Tour is tremendous. I've played Sherwood Country Club a few times right after the Target World Challenge and never managed to score well...in fact one of the guys in the group in front of us was a scratch golfer and he failed to break 80 and they were having us play from the regular tees...not the tournament tees.
The best I managed at Sherwood was 98 on my third attempt. That's 14 strokes above my handicap and Sherwood wasn't set up anywhere close to the course set up for a PGA TOUR major championship...nor does it play to 7400 yards from the tournament tees.
