The weather here has taken abouth a 15 degree turn tin the last two weeks and with little rain and snow this winter some local courses are open I played 9 holes last night at a local par 60. the the course was in fairly decent shape but the geens were very inconsistent but hey at least it's golf and what can you really expect. shot a 40 which wasn't too bad for the first round in about 6 months. I was by myself so i got to practice a little, hitting shots from different distances, lots of chips, etc. It's Awesome to be playing golf again. Bring on the Season
I got my first round in tuesday. Only played 9 holes and shot a 56. Not what I had planned on shooting but after months without play, I guess its a start. Planning on playing tommorow and as much as I possibly can. I'm also glad the season has finally arrived. Best of luck to all.
I played today with some drizzle during the round. The 9-hole course was so muddy and soaked that we kept shaking our heads as to why we were out there. To my amazement I carded a 46 ( I now have an index of 29+).
This winter has had excessive precipitation: I am sick of the rain! In the San Francisco Bay Area we just set a 100+ year record for the most days with rain in arch 2006: 26 days vs. 24 days in 1904. The sodden course I play really rattles me. If I hit fat at all, my ball will go about 20 feet.
On the other hand, if I played in such wet conditions all the time I would learn to hit the ball more "clean". A dry course at times may give the benefit of "bounce shots".
I played my first round of the year on Saturday. I did play one round in January, when everything was rock hard and brown. Saturday there was green grass and green greens.
I shoot anywhere in the 80's, depending on the day. In this round I had 3 double bogeys and a triple bogey, and carded 84. The triple was on 18.
I have shot 80 twice, and have had 4 or 5 legitimate chances at breaking 80 but choke down the stretch. Next time I'll just remove my head.

oh man you guys are lucky, i am still waiting for my gold course to open so me can satrt playing, rumor has it it will be open in next week to ten days, cant wait!
Usually courses up here don't open till late april or early may, but we've had very little rain this spring and cant actually remember when there was sonw on the ground last , allowing alot of courses to open a month early . It'll be great to get a few rounds in and the kinks out before I head south next month. I have been counting down the days for a couple of weeks now......27 days, and about 9 hours till I leave
Without trying to make you guys hate me, especially since I'm a newb, I'll just say that I played my 40th round of the 2006 year today.
It has been a great winter for golf in the lower Northeast. If you don't mind playing bump-n-runs on the frozen greens, that is... But it was nice to actually be outside, albeit bundled up on a few days.
I'm very fortunate. Back about 7 years ago, my wife was offered a promotion with her company, which meant relocating. We took the bonus and relocating expense check and paid off most all of our debt. (I was working two jobs at the time)
We suddenly found ourselves with options. We decided that we didn't have to be the traditional family where the wife stays home and the husband goes to work, especially since I couldn't earn the income in three years what my wife makes in one year. And she loves her career, so it was really a no-brainer. We decided that our kids would be best served with me at home as opposed to farming them out to daycare. It's worked out well, although I often think of what it would be like to once again have a career. Nevertheless, I think we made the right decision, especially considering all of the **** that kids are faced with today. Times have changed since I was in school.
But it's not as easy as most people would think. I work more now than I ever did for an employer, but I do have the ability to chose my own schedule. When the kids are out of school during the summer, I'm basically home-bound. So I try to get in as much golf as possible, whilst still tending to the stay-home dad thing. Given the conditions we had this winter, I took advantage of less snow days for the kids, and reasonable golf weather for me. :)
But I don't take it for granted. I went from working 70 hours/week to make ends meet to suddenly being semi-retired. And I say "semi" because I'm sure that when the kids get older, I will once again look for something to help pay off their college tuition. LOL.... But I have the best job in the world right now, and I don't take it for granted. ;)
