Despite temperatures in the 40s and the threat of rain, I headed out to play 18 yesterday. I'm glad I did as I shot a 99 and broke 100 for the first time. Except for two holes, I played pretty well. I never hit a bad drive and was able to recover from bad shots and minimize the damage. I averaged about 1.77 putts per hole, though on maybe 4 or 5 holes I used to putter from off the green in addition to the 1 official putt. It was a lot of fun.
I managed to hit the stick twice. Once on a chip from about 20 yards. It rolled up tot he hole and glanced off the flag and off the green. If it hit the flag squarely it would have gone in. The other was an 8 iron. I hit it thin and it hit the flag about 3 feet up and ended up in the creek behind the green. I managed to get up and in for a bogey.
My wife is nervous as I promised myself a new set of really nice clubs when I broke 90. When my best was 114, about 4 months ago, she was sure it would be quite a while. I feel like I can do it this year.
awesome.. congratulations... i also bought my first set of new clubs when i broke a hundred about 8 years ago..
i'm not the greatest golfer in the world - i shoot high 80's to low 90's, but here are a few quick tips to staying under 100....these help me anyway!
1. don't concern yourself with what others are hitting (in terms of distance)..
2. practice, practice, and practice from a 100 yards in...
3. maintain good tempo
4. driver? who needs a driver? a solid consistent 3-wood from the tee box works well for me.
tempo and pride are what cause me the most problems... both being mental and are directly connected..
Brilliant! The trick now is to realize that you can break 100 and to do it again! Driver is not necessary for anyone who can't break 80. I play off 11 and only use my 3 wood off the tee and have broken 80 numerous times on long courses (6600 yards). I am not particularly long either so just keep the ball in play and you will break 100 more often!

Kudo's to ya. Golf is setting it's hook. Maybe your wife will take up the game if she hasn't already.
I leave my driver at home. It dawned on me that I can't hit the darn thing, so why do I use it. I'd rather go 220-230 straight with the 3 wood than 250 out of bounds.
My wife and kids are taking up the game. If the weather ever gets nice, we will begin hitting the range and getting them some lessons.

Get the 90 and get the clubs! I'm pulling for you.
90 is going to be a lot more difficult than 100 . To shave off those extra strokes make a record of where (in what part of the game) you are losing the most strokes to par, that will identify what you need to work on most. Probably it will be in your short game. Also if you play the same course many times you can improve by making better course management decisions. Good job! It gets more and more fun to play as you feel you have more control over your game
