Sonds like a great week. Keep us up to date of what's going on. Maybe you can do a daily blog like I did for the Masters. It only took a couple minutes a day and would be some very interesting reading.
Just been told we have to change Muirfield and the Old Lady round but who cares which way we play them. I have played both Carnoustie and The Old Lady many times since 1975. Muirfield will be my first visit.
Well, were here in Largoward, five miles from St Andrews. The weather is dry at the moment and there is a stiff breeze but the forecast is not brilliant for the next couple of days.
Our itinerary has been changed at the last minute, the R&A have a team match on Thursday so we play the 'Old Lady' at 08.30 tomorrow. Then we go to Muirfield for 9.00 Thursday and finally to Carnoustie for 09.00 Friday. At Muirfield, because we are a fourball we have to start on the 10th, strange.
We are staying in the same Hotel we always stay in when we are up here and I can't believe that they still have the square of floor with Doug Sanders spike marks in it, nearly 36 years on. The story goes that in 1970 Doug rented the house on the other side of the road and when he missed 'that putt' he came straight to this place and had a few Brandies without even changing his shoes. Hence the spike marks.
I will introduce our fourball.
Theres me, David, 50 tomorrow playing off 6, my partner Colin ** a retired Butcher playing the other way round off 5. Our opponents are Chris, a 40 year old golf rep off 3 and Allan a Hotelier off 6. There will be no shots given or taken as we are here to enjoy ourselves.
Well the screen on my Laptop is jumping so I do hope this gets posted, tell you more tomorrow.
Sounds like a great group of guys to play with. Don't over indulge in the liquid refreshments the night before. I would hate to have a trip like that ruined by a hangover. Keep us up to date and have a great time.
Were back in the hotel.
Colin and I have the first win so pay for dinner tonight.
We won it on the 18th, we had a better-ball of 69 and we all shot around 74 or 75.
When we stood on the first it looked like we would have the best wind here, behind going out and then changing to behind coming home when the tide turned. No such luck, stayed the same all day.
The tees were well forward and the pins were not tucked away so the 'Old Lady' was not playing too difficult. I only managed two birdies, 5 & 10 but did make a 4 4 4 finish. Colin made two birdies too, at 10 & 12. Allan had only one at 11 ( a great two, thought he might be buying drinks when we saw where he had finished, 2"). Chris had the most birdies with three at 4, 6 & 10, he also had to play off the road at 17 but still made four.
We were behind two Japanese guys to start with but they let us play through on the seventh and when we were coming back up the 10th Colin got us to watch them as they filled one of there golf bags with sand from one of the bunkers on the 9th.
On 17 even though the pin was on the right side of the green we all hit a shot from 200yds out to a pin position behind the road bunker, 3 ended in it while I hit it over by the 18th tee trying to hit a long hooking pitch & run. But I would have had the easiest next shot. Yes we all did try and get out of that bunker and only Allan failed.
We have had a look round the Golf Museum and had a walk around the Town.
We play Muirfield tomorrow so will post again tomorrow night.
We have played this morning and now we are off to Carnoustie to try and get some holes in at Panmure tonight.
Today the weather was dry but windy: very windy: about 35-40mph, my kind of weather. We knew we were in for a windy day when the Forth Road Bridge was closed to high sided vehicles this morning on the way down.
Well, Colin and I won again (2&1) so pay for dinner AGAIN, I think they may be letting us win.
Chris shot 70 today with 3 birdies (3, 5 & 7), Colin had a 71 with 2 birdies (4 & 11), I had a 72 with 3 birdies (3, 5 & 17) while Allan didn't cope too well with the wind for a 78 but did make 3 birdies (5, 13 & 17). All in all, we played well and I must say that Muirfield is not too difficult in a wind IF YOU CAN MISS THE BUNKERS, we did, not a single sand shot all day. Most of the holes here have entrances to the greens for running shots so the 'Texas Wedge' is well in use.
To let you know how strong the wind was, Chris and I both drove the 3rd (377yds) with 3woods. This after I had earlier hit a good driver and a solid low 4iron at the 12th (381yds), don't forget we had to start at the 10th this morning.
The Match ended on the 8th when Chris missed from 8ft for a par 4, all of us taking 5.
I will post the scorecards when I get back home on Tuesday. Allen is our photographer this week so I look forward to being able to post some images of this great part of Scotland then.
