Good driver under $250

I started hitting a driver this year and am looking for a new one this weekend. I normaly hit mid 90's to mid 100's but I play only irons and a putter. Not sure on club head speed but I hit TM rac LTs with S300 sensicore. I hit the my 3 iron 200-210yds and my 7 iron 150-160 yds. I dont want to spend more then $250. What would be some good last season drivers to look at and should I get a stiff or regular shaft. I know I will need to hit them before buying but I was just looking for some places to start.

Thanks

Have you considered a clone? You can get good ones for less than $100. Regarding the shaft, you need to know your swing speed. If it's more than 95mph you should go for stiff. Judging by your iron distances I would say your swing speed is between 95-100mph assuming your quality of strike is good.

The Callaway Titanium is a good club with above average performance. You can pick them up off Ebay or Callaway pre-owed for under $100. With the info you gave I would say go with a Stiff shaft.

Before you buy a new driver, you owe it to yourself to have a trained Golf Pro assist you. Places such as GolfSmith have experts equipped with computers to analyse your unique swing so as to: 1.) Reveal your swing traits - good and bad; and 2.) Indentify ways to reduce swing flaws- slice or pull; 3.) Recommend the best club characteristics and technology to make you hit the ball better and more consistent. This is what a friend recommended I do before buying a new driver. It turned out to the best advice ever.

I love the driver I ended up with! The Pro recommended a Nichlaus 440 Offset with the correct shaft for my swing speed; proper grips for my hand size, the best length for my height, etc., all for about $200. By the way, he offered some very good swing improvement "pointers" at no extra cost.

Good luck.

I totally agree.. I just bought a new r5 for around 205 shipped off ebay.. I've been using it for a couple weeks and its nice.. My friend has the "Draw" type r5, and i like it better than my "Neutral" type.. I just feel more confident with the Draw setup, not sure.. It's preference I guess..

The R5, and the original R7 are both around $200 now. Not sure where you're located, but around here there are TONS of them....you can walk into a shop and find one with any shaft you want/need! If you really want to save some $$, look into an R580xd, they are getting rediculously cheap, and are still a very very good driver.

you could also try an innovex cfd. less than $200 but demoing one might be a bit tough.

i'm getting a couple of things from them when i have the money and the driver is first on the list.

Don't forget!!!!

You can get a custom built Infiniti, SMT, and Bang with a shaft that will fit your swing for under $250.00.

Today at work I was thinking. Wouldnt a 3 wood be better for me right now. They are cheaper and I could get something from this year. They are also more vestile. Rather then hit a driver 4 or 5 times a 9, I could hit a 3 wood from the tee box but also from the fairway or rough. I would be getting more use out of a cheaper club. I would give up some distance but I am used to playing with lack of distance because of my all iron play. This is just a thought. Does this sound about right. Good idea on the compter/pro fittingto critque my swing. You are right on that. If I am spending that much money on a single club it wont hurt to get all the advice I can first.

Even cheaper, get a TM R580xd, or cheaper still a R540 or R580 without the XD. I got my R540 for about US$70 on Ebay brand new. I absolutely love it. The 580 is a bit bigger (400cc) if the 540 (350cc) is too small.

The 3wood idea is good, logical thinking. But you should be able to find yourself both a good driver and a good 3wood under $250 total. Closed out inventory is much cheaper than the new stuff.

If you have to choose, and you don't have issues with the current driver you have, I would opt for the 3wood personally, (IF you don't already have a 5wood that is.) If you have a 5wood, go with the driver. I find that most players at our level don't get that much more distance with the 3wood, and give up a lot of accuracy compared to the 5wood.

Just my thoughts anyway.
Good luck.

The Adam 460TI with upgraded shaft is available in that price range brand new. It is as long and easy to hit as anything out there. Carbon fiber top, Aldila upgrade shaft options. Heck of a lot of technology for the money. Available on Ebay with regular shafts for around $100. Highly recommended.

i think you can get a titleist 905t with either the ys-6+ or aldila nv brand new from TGW.com. they're already on sale and they're having a titleist semi-annual sale on top of that so i think you can get a brand new 905t for less than $250

The new Callaway X Driver is around $239 at my course... cant immagine it being much more elsewhere. I've hit it and it goes.
