How do you guys and gals feel about groups of 5? This Sunday my buddy and I went out and got caught behind a group of 5, who was behind a group of 4, who were behind another group of 5. The group in front of us was okay but the ones infront of them about 6+ hits a piece to get on the green then another 4 putts to get it in. That was on par 4's and 3's not even going to mention the 5's...took us about 3 hours to finish 9. On the bend there was nobody on the front 9 since it was around 5 so we asked at the shop if we could redo the front 9 instead of trailing the back 9. Second time around got to the 8th hole in a little over an hour. Never been caught behing such large groups before and now I know why some courses don't allow groups of 5
I played at a course called Los Verdes in SoCal and it took me 6 hours to play 18. Every group was a group of 5 and the club house made sure of that. It pretty much made me go crazy. The only good thing about it was that it was $25 for a great course and ocean views on all the holes.
"Some courses"? If the course is allowing 5, then it's normally a very small muni. Most of the courses around here wont even let you play two (the stick someone with you) let alone 5. If you play 5 here, you're a few minutes away of either breaking the group up or leaving the course. I always just call the clubhouse and complain when I get behind a group of 5 (unless they are playing very very fast, which is probably not likely).
I assume you were playing a municipal course. Munis are owned by the county and in order to get as much money as possible from the patrons, they charge small green fees but they make sure to load up the course. If you have the time, it's kind of a small price to pay for a round of golf. Try to find semi private clubs where the price is slightly higher but they only allow 5-somes after a certain time, like around 12pm or so.
should never happen. although.......... the day of my wedding me and my buddies (12 of us) played the 18th together... needless to say it was very hard to figure out which ball was whos.
yah ,those 5+ groups really slow down the pace. I went out to a little 9-hole par 3 course (just a little pitch-and-putt type place) on saturday to work on my irons. Well, I get there, end up getting paired with this woman, when we notice that we have a group of 4 in front of us, 5 in front of them, and a 5 in front of them. It took us 2 & 1/2 hours to finish the 9 holes in the cold, cloudy, damp weather. Normally I can do it in an hour. Needless to say it wasn't a good day (score wise).
Well i dont care how big the group is whether its 5 or more or 3-4..... slow players especially when you are in a hurry are just fusterating. On the other hand there could be a group of 5 great players who play fast. Anyways its not really groups of 5 or more that annoy me but slow players because there could be a fast group of 5 or more.
I play public courses exclusively and 5-somes are never allowed anywhere I play. The only time I run into them is when they've secretly hooked up somehow and then I usually play through as there is seldom a group in front of them.
where i play here in monterey 5-somes are not allowed but when i went down to houston to play with my dad a month or so ago we were stuck behind a 5-some almost every round. we played at a course called brock , not sure if its a muni or what, but it sure wasn't strict. a couple times i saw people out there playing in coveralls, blue jeans, and shirts w/o sleeves.
a side note, i got so upset a few times out there when we would be waiting for the group in front of us to clear the green , waited for everyone to 2-3 putt after reading the green from both sides, then when they all putted out they stayed on the green practice putting because the group in front of them was still teeing off. GET OFF THE GREEN!!!! my dad is not confrontational so i had to settle with calling the marshal after the second time.
Most of the courses I golf at have 4-somes and those are bad enough. They're usually a bunch of old fellas and usually let us younger guys play through. Once and a while I'll get cought behind a 5-some but thats pretty rare thank heavens.

mcgwire40 is right.
I play with an extended group of guys that makes our standing Saturday 4-some reservation expand or contract depending how many show up. Most of the time we go out as our original 4-some. Frequently one or more friends show up to "crash in" on our T-time. If 5 of us show up and the course is busy, we go out 2 and then 3, or with 6, 3 and 3 or 2 and 6. In any case, we all usually tee off on the 9th together to finish the round, en mass. We are all proficient and are very careful to not hold up the play of others behind us.
We know this is against the course rules but we see it as ---- No harm, No foul.
I would not play a course that allowed 5. I also have never heard of such a thing, even on the muni courses. I could see that happening at private courses, where there isn't as much play.
