Conspicuous consumption in golf

How much does the look of a golf club mean to your buying decisions? I see comments on how "cool" blade irons such as the Mizunos look. I wonder how many average players are in way over their heads with such unforgiving equipment based on visual appeal and the fact that the pros can use them as opposed to the accuracy performance of the clubs on the driving range?

hmm looks of a club.... I would go with about 25-30% that looks of a club matter to me. Ugly and effective is far better then great looking and useless.

I don't care about "cool" looking head covers either like a lot of people I know.

I think looks plays quite a big factor for me, you have to feel confident looking at it. It doesn't always have to be pretty though. Ping clubs are ugly, but they look functional, like they'd work. So their looks might do it for me more than a beautiful looking blade that looks impossible to hit.

If something looks functional and attractive I'm more likely to try it. My Dad had a Wilson Deep Red II tour driver, and that thing is just the most beautiful club. I'm tempted to get one even though my driver is going so well at the moment, mines just not as exciting to look at!

It does play a factor. Some players can hit Callaway product fantastically but hate the thick Top Line look on most of their clubs.

I work part time at a major golf chain and I can tell you it does matter.

Many folks will not even touch a club that looks like it has too much offset.

Others will not buy a Ping iron because of the lack of a furrel on all but one of their lines.

Same with Wilson, some folks hate the color of their woods.

But, there is just so much great product out there that we all can have the luxury of finding a club that not only hits great but looks great too!!!!!!!!!

Look certainly plays a part for me, but it certainly wouldnt be the major decider. Alot of others would not be the same, presumably because of a larger role of their mind within their games!

looks plays a pretty big role. when i'm looking for a club i automatically eliminate the brands that look ugly/unwieldy. i could probably hit the Nike SQ a mile but i can't get over the fact that it looks like a shoebox

Same here, looks play a big part in my buying. I got the Nike blades because of the thin top lines and the price when I bought them. Before that I was playing some Titleist 804's and had no confidence in swinging out of the thick rough. It was probably all mental but I kept thinking theres no way this club is slicing though the grass.

I"m new to the sport, and when I was looking to buy a set of irons, I was seriously contemplating getting the X-18's from Callaway, because they looked great to me.. However, I decided to go with the Mizuno mx-23's instead for the superb forgiveness.. Sure I considered the look, but in the end, I decided to go with results..

Looks means alot to me, and I'm not talking the kind of looks like "Ohh, look at those Mizuno's in that guys bag, they look sweet".

I'm talking about looks at address. I like a club to look a certain way and if it doesn't I'm not as confident.

I don't think that you can really get in over your head anymore with irons. I mean unless you're just higher than a 20 handicap then you probably shouldn't be hitting blades, but the new technology and the way everyone is gearing toward forgivness, you blades of today are nothing like the blades twenty years ago. I hit the MP 32's which are similar to blades (in looks) and they are no different to hit than my old Cleveland TA7's, but the confidence factor is greater because I love the looks of the MP32's at address.

The prettiest girl doesn't always make the best wife, and the best looking clubs don't always perform the best! But if all you care about is the impression you make with them by your side (clubs or women), you will be destined to a lifetime of trying to upgrade everytime something prettier catches your eye!

Hmmm, why did Freddy Couples just come to mind?

Looks are probably much more important to the duffer than most will care to admit - Golf is a fashion industry now and as with many things (cars) the size and cost of the bag and its contents are supposed to reflect the owners view of themselves.

Clubs... Irons all look pretty much the same. Silver Shaft, black grip and a silver head!

Exception on the shaft colour if its graphite

Who wants ugly golf equipment? If you haven't bought something you later regret, then you have not been golfing very long.

They look OK, I guess, and I certainly wouldn't have gotten them had they been dull, but once again that's because I would not have seen them in the first place.

So yes, I suppose looks are important. That may explain why I keep them clean & shiny!

It plays a part in my decisions...the way the club looks at address is a big part of the entire "feel" of the shot. If I don't feel comfortable over a shot, I'm probably not going to hit a very good shot. I like my clubs to look a certain way and if they don't fit that, then I'm not maximizing my confidence, which is more important in golf than the actual equipment you're using, IMO.
