Ever wondered...

Has anybody ever wondered why the short putts are harder to make than the long putts. Well physically they arent harder to make but mentally yes. Nobody expects you to make that 20, 30, 40 footer, etc but people are expecting you to hole out with a 3 foot, 4 foot, 5 foot, etc. So we over think it and sometimes miss. Basically its a pressure shot.

Basically i made this thread because i had never really thought about that till a few days ago when a friend mentioned it after we were walking away from the green.

Pressure can do a lot of things. It can erode metal, but it can also make a diamond. ;)

Thanks for that! For reasons totally unrelated to golf, it was just what I needed to hear.

Compared to what proportion I expect to make, I may make more longer putts, but I'll take the shorter ones any day of the week.

You don't expect to make the long ones and you do the short ones so when you miss the short ones you feel really messed up.

I found I usually missed the short ones because I was too timid with the putt. I now try to take a firm stroke at it and take any break out of the putt. Of course I don't do that on downhill putts but any other short ones I do. Watch the pros. On 3-4 foot putts they always hit the back of the cup.

I think shorter putts are much easier.

The percentage of short putts to long putts you make is greater. But to me it really sticks out in your mind when you miss a short putt than when you miss a 20, 30, or 40 foot putt.
