i ve never walked a course before because of the strain on my back from swinging alot at the range i just figured it wouldnt be such a good idea but im needing to get into better shape and why not do it while doing my faveorite thing so i was wondering how many golfers walk the courses ? would it be better to only try 9 holes at first and see how my back holds up and what if anything else should i take along with me/ water and energy bars are a must for me should i limit my clubs i carry in my bag ? get a smaller bag , buy a pull cart ? what do some of you golfers use? thanks for any sugestions

You don't need anything special to walk the course. Just a bag full of clubs. Mavbye invest in a nice stand bag with 2 straps. (Ping make the best stand/carry bags ex. Hoofer Series)

I'm a huge fan of my push cart (or baby carriage as my friends like to say)

I agree with Tallshorty, if you are having trouble with your back but you still want to walk I recommend a pull cart. You can rent them at the course and if you find you really like them then you can buy one for yourself. They also make self propelled carts that all you have to do is turn it on and it drives itself. I have one and love it.

I pull mine when I walk, which is my preferred mode of playing until the temps creep up into the mid 80s. It's becoming much harder to do it enjoyably as so many ride these days and you often end up having to let a group riding play through every few holes. I always carry plenty of water. I have no idea why someone would want to carry their bag unless they were doing it for the workout. I'm 51 and in reasonably decent condition.

Waz I use to think it was silly for people to use pull carts until father time smacked me one across the head. Mr. Bogey and I still play in the afternoon and in Georgia it's right at 98-99 degrees when we start. Nothing like a good sweat to get your adreline going.

Walking is the best way to enjoy golf. I have a pull cart and a light bag. You can pick up a pull cart for $50 or so, and it will eventually pay for itself not having to rent one every time.

The alternative is you could rent one once and walk 9 holes and see how you like it. It's good excercise and beats driving hands-down. Give it a try!

Once you walk a few rounds you may resent being told that you have to rent a cart. My buddies & I book most of our rounds where we can walk. None of us are kids. We are guys that appreciate the walk. What's funny is that a lot of folks who should consider walking ... WON'T.

I walk everytime I go out, because I don't want to pay the 7-10 dollar cart fees at my club. I golf about everday so that would add up in a hurry. I have a regular sun mountain stand bag with 14 clubs and still walk if its 90+ out. One day two weeks ago it was 98 and I still walked, but man I was soaked.

Drink plenty of water, I am going through about a 16 oz of water every 2-3 holes in the summer time.

There used to be another older guy that walked the course as well, but now he has started to ride because of the heat. I also have to get ready for the college season where you have to walk 18 every match.

Routine I guess. I have always carried and dont plan on stoping. The thing about riding for me is I get in the cart and I feel I'm just screwing around and not playing golf.

If you have a bad back, don't carry the bag - get a good pull cart. Also, make sure your golf shoes have plenty of support. That's very important. I also have a bad back and spend lots of time on my feet at work. Good support on the feet makes all the difference in the world.

Coming from a country where walking is obligatory....

I dont suggest a 'push cart' unless you actually push it. Around here, if you see someone pushing, it generally means the person is female, so most men pull carts. Unfortunately it can be really tough on your back because it gets you all twisted. Carrying a light bag would probably be less of a strain.

I wouldnt worry too much about it all, we have people in their mid 80's will walk 9 without any real problem, so you should have none either.

My home course is walk only, as are many here...I really can't stand having to ride anymore and walk if at all possible...it is faster than riding, your clubs are always with you, I loosen up and get into the groove better when walking, and makes the round so much more enjoyable as you can actually relax vs feeling like you are in traffic behind a wheel...I would say that the trolley is the way to go...I hate the distraction of setting/unsetting the bag and straps on each shot...if you are worried about your back, don't...I bet you will feel better after walking vs riding, and a few rounds will help with your overall fitness and well being...

I don't walk. I have nothing against walking though. 100% of the people I play with though are riders and wont walk, so I'm not going to be the odd man and walk while they ride and get to their balls 3 minutes before and have to wait. It doesn't really matter to me either way though. I don't feel like I'm getting less of the golf experience by riding or not actually playing golf by riding.

I would say if you are going to start walking...maybe start out only with nine holes or do like others here and get a pull cart. The last time I did walk a course and carry my clubs (PING hoofer bag) my legs hurt for a week after, and I would consider myself in very good shape.
