I made a complicated spreadsheet for stats a while back that converts up and downs, sand shots, GIRs and fairways hit into percentages, also records putts, pars, bogeys and birdies as well as score for the front, back and overall...I have been religiously putting in the stats for about a year and studying the results...recently I have stopped and stopped looking at past results, and stopped thinking about the holes in terms of stats...it was creeping into my game (ie: how many GIRs am I working on now as I stand over the ball on the 12th)...stopping has helped clear my mind and my scores are dropping, ballstriking better and I have less going on in my head on the course...

My vote is GIR also, but that is because that is my strength. If I had the time to take the game more seriously, I should be tracking my putting (where I feel that I am losing valuable strokes), and when that time comes I will. However, until I can find more time, I am not beating myself up over my putting. I am trying to have some fun on the course.

I keep track of my putts. Puttign is the most important part in golf and if you have to many putts, say hello to high scores.

Fairways. If you hit fairways, you hit greens. You hit greens you score well. If you can't hit fairways you don't hit as many greens.Simple

Agree with GIRs. You have to give yourself a chance.

For me, it's fairways hit, because if I'm in the fairway, I'm almost always on the green in reg, so I guess the two go hand in hand, but I concentrate on hitting fairways first, and then the GIR's will usually happen naturally.

GIR with putting second. You can miss a fairway and still hit a great shot...sometimes better to not be in the fairway if you have a better shot at the green.

There was a study made once that, to break 80, you need to hit 8 GIR's. I feel that it's #1 GIR, #2 Putts and #3 Scrambling. If you can't chip and putt then no amount of GIR's will help you

That sounds about right to me. Most places I play don't have very penal rough. As long as I'm close to the fairway, I generally have about as good a shot as if I'd hit the fairway.

Some items of interest for barely breaking 80:

Hit half the fairways and greens
Not a single eagle (would make a lower score hehe)
No worse than triple and only 1% triples here
Just need to hit 1 out of 3 par 3's, half the par 4's, and 2/3 of the par 5's
2 putt when you hit the green
less than 2 putts when you miss the green

:)
