I am beginning to get interested in learning to play golf. I have received conflicting advice about purchasing clubs among other things 1. Woman's vs mens clubs.....I am 5'11 should I be looking for clubs designed for women.. I would like also to know if I should take private lessons to learn.
It doesn't matter if you are 5.1 or 6.1. What matters is your swing speed. If below 80-85mph you will need a soft shaft. Your best bet if you just started to play golf is to buy a cheap womens set off the shelf (or buy second hand)until your game improves, then you can get fitted
Patience is a key. Playing/practicing three to four times a week will give you the basics of golf in three to four years. This game has the longest learning curve of any sport. Taking up the game before you age 20 will give you an edge, but golf can be enjoyable at any age. Proper equipment and lessons will help immensely. Hope the game "bites" you as it did me nearly 60 years ago!
Because you are thrown in at the deepend. You can either hit the ball or you cant and the only way to sort it is to keep trying! With other sports, the first step is rather more trivial (basketball... gravity basically does the bouncing for you, soccer... you might not kick it well, but even a 90 year old could kick a ball to some extent!).

Thank you,
Do you know anyone who plays golf? Even a little? I recommend you have someone with some experience take you to the driving range a few times, let you get the real general idea of what a golf swing looks like, learn what the different clubs do, learn the basics of feet placement, grip, etc, and then take a lesson or 5.
If you take a lesson before ever going to the range, you will be paying someone $50+/hr to teach you where to stand, how to hold the club, what distance each club hits, etc, and those are all things that a novice can explain to you for free.
I'd also recommend picking up "Golf for Dummies" or something similar to have as a reference; I looked through my copy a number of times as I was learning for a wide variety of basic information.
As far as clubs, I know Wilson makes a beginner Women's set for about $180, and it has EVERYTHING you need, down to a glove and towel. Might be a good place to start, I'm trying to get my gf to buy that set so she can learn and play with me.
As I explained to my qife when she asked why golf was so difficult: you take a club nearly 4 feet long, swing it through 28 feet of arc trying to hit a ball 1.68 inches diameter at a target 200 yards away and the difference between a good shot and a bad one is 1/100th of an inch. And there are about 6 different ways to hit each lofted club. Then there is putting....
