Must be "silly season" for my men's league. This weekend is our 4-club event. Not sure which 4 clubs to carry. Currently thinking: 2-wood, 9-wood, 9-iron, putter. Should be interesting.
Last year, only 22 guys entered (I didn't). Probably a similarly small turnout this year. Am curious to see how much I'll be hurt by having so few clubs.
Last year's results:
Best net: 2 under, by an 8 hdcp.
Worst net: 18 over, by a 31 hdcp.
Avg net score for all 22 players: 7 over par.
Avg net score for 10 players with single-digit hdcp: 4.4 over par.
Avg net score for 8 players with hdcp of 10 to 19: 8.4 over par.
Avg net score for 4 players with 20+ hdcp: 10.8 over par.
Not surprising, I guess, but it appears that the worse you play with 14 clubs, the more it will hurt you to have only 4.
I'm guessing I'll shoot about 96 / net 79 (8 over par).
Kind of an interesting event.

I love events like this Jim. We use to have a 3-club tourney w/ 8-12 friends, and alot of 12-ounce friends- twice a year- spring and fall. We played at a rinky-dink course no matter what the weather. It makes you think alot about your yardages.
I was 1 of 2 guys that did not bring a putter. But with 4 clubs I might. It all depends on the kind of course, is it short? Long? tight? Wide open? If every aspect is about average, I would bring 3 or 4-wood, 6 iron, PW, putter. I would not take anything w/ more loft than a PW- because it serves as too many uses- from 120 yard full shots, to opening it and closing it around the greens. Good luck .
what the total distance of the course? are there a lot of long holes?
i would think 2/3i, 7i, PW, P would be a good combo
The course is tight and penalizes off-line shots, but it's only about 6100 yards long from the middle tees (which we'll be playing), so actually your suggestion is very good... except for a short hitter like me. Hate to say it, but my 2-wood goes only about 205 (straight, anyway), and I think I might want the distance. But maybe I could drop down to a 7-wood ( = a 3-iron for me) in order to get clubs that would be better suited for the approach shots.

A guy I know is thinking of not taking his putter, and putting with a sand wedge instead. But his hdcp is +0.25; his club control might be a shade better than mine!

Gave me something to think about; thanks!
Heck, you could putt with your 2-wood, so it could serve dual-purpose. That would give you another club option. I've seen pros putting with 3-woods, so why not a 2-wood?
Ill go you one better than this, (or 3 as the case may be). While in the USAF in the late 80s early 90s my base softball team used to sponsor a *One Club* tournament. You chose one club to play 18 holes with. It was a lot of fun and we had the course for the day on the base, so there wasnt a worry about time or holding anyone up. The first year we only had about 30 entries, but the last year I was involved (3rd yr for tournament) we had to cut entries off at 144. FYI vast majority of the clubs were 5,6,7 irons. Scores were ridiculously high compared to normal rounds, but it was a blast. In three years of doing this, the best i shot was 102, about 20 over a normal round for me at the time.
These sort of tournaments can be alot of fun, so enjoy it and let us know how u do Jim.

Well, if about one-third of my shots will be putts, then why not have exactly the right club for that many shots?
HOWEVER, ya got me thinkin', TW. It occurs to me: Heck, I ain't that great a putter! Lately, I haven't even been trying to be a good putter. I've just been trying not to be a bad putter. So why not putt with driver? If I can just avoid 3-jacking it, my total number of putts might be the same as usual.
So I looked at the additional options created by leaving the putter at home. I imagined the course hole by hole, and I'm thinking maybe: 1-wood (there 2 holes where 2-wood might not get me far enough; I'll just have to choke down or something on the narrow holes), 7-wood, 6-iron, 9-iron. (I also considered 1-wood, 9-wood, 8-iron, gap wedge, but that that wouldn't match up as well with the par-3 distances on this particular course.)
Did some putting with driver tonight. Have to use an open stance and really focus on making good contact. Not used to hearing a Cleveland Launcher sound when I putt, though.
Lots of good suggestions in this thread; thanks for helping me think about this, folks!
I suspect that most of the entrants WILL carry a putter. As a guy I know observed: "You can miss a lot of putts putting with a sand wedge." However, largely for the amusement of the guys in my group, I may leave the putter at home. This morning a coworker demonstrated his technique for putting with a 7-iron (delofting the blade by playing ball well back in his stance). I may try that at home tonight.
Regarding the other clubs, I'll probably need to mentally play my way around the course tonight, seeing which combination my best work. I might, for example, be sure to include clubs that will be just right (or nearly right) for this course's par 3's.
Rain might linger into the weekend. Hope we don't get rained out.
