Long Drive Competition

I was on the Cobra and the Remax websites and was looking at the "longest drives" section of the sponsored guys in these competitions. I was curious about what it would take to get involved in one of these, or if any of you have been.

Right now, I'm playing with a Wilson Deep Red Tour (certainly not a long driver), and my best in the fairway has been 367 yards, and my average at the driving range is about 320-330 on the ground. It can't roll because the driving range goes uphill and after 250 is deep stuff. I hit with my old Cobra, and my average seems to be a little longer.

My question. Does it sound like I should invest in a specific driver to try to qualify for some long drive comps? I have the money right now, but I'm not 100% that I'd be good enough. I've only been involved with golf for a couple years. Any advice? Thanks.

Not sure where you live but around here some of the driving ranges have anual long-drive competitions. You might want to those first.

I went to watch one a few years ago. And some dude named Cary Shuman (sp?) was busting 400 yard drives consistently. He had a driver that looked like it was about 60-inches long.

(Sorry, I know this ins'tmuch help )

If you hit the ball straight, average ~320 - 330 yds with no roll, using range balls, and equipment not necessarily made for long-ball competition - you potentially could have a career as a long driver - especially considering you've only been playing the game for a few years.

Who knows how long you'll hit the ball with a fitted driver and competition golf balls? you might easily average over 350 yards? I haven't seen too many long driving competitions recently, but I think 350 yards wins you something.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info, guys. That's what I've been thinking. Yeah, I'm just playing the Deep Red with a normal stiff shaft and range balls. The 367 was with Callaway Warbirds and it caught a bump just right, I'm sure. I think I'll look into a new driver.

Looks like they only allow 50" long in the competitions. I'm going to try to look for someone that can fit me that has some experience with long drive stuff. Thanks again.
