What do you think about playing as a single? I don't mind playing alone but when I play with people I don't know, I just don't seem to concentrate as well - probably because I am more relaxed around people I know.

I enjoy playing by myself because I'm just learning the game and there is so much I need to concentrate on. I'm afraid that it makes me seem "standoffish" sometimes but it's because I have to think about what I'm doing rather than being social. On the other hand I've played a couple of pretty good rounds when I've had to team up with someone I don't know because the course is busy. Maybe it gets the competitive juices flowing or something. I do agree that I play best when I'm with my buddies. I'm totally relaxed and for us it is all about having a good time, not about who wins.
For awhile, I would play just as well playing with someone else. But last time out, I played much more poorly and have been at the driving range 5 times since then. I think whether I play well or not just depends on whether my swing is decent and not whether I'm paired with others.
However, I seemed to have my best round of the year, in 2005 and 2006, when playing with my father. And I only played with him about 2 or 3 rounds a year. So maybe there is something to what you said.
I can enjoy playing alone, also. I prefer to play with my husband or people whose company I like, but I'm an introvert and really like and appreciate my time alone to think too, and out on the course is a great place to do that.
The majority of my play anymore is alone. After work 3 times a week, I go out and play 9 at the closest local course to my construction site. I cherish this time, because for that time, my phone is turned off, and I get some peace and quiet. Also, I tend to remember things I need to do during this time, and it keeps me sharp at work.
There is nobody here that I know that I can get to go golfing. The other day I was behind a couple of slow guys, and the guy behind caught up with me. We finished out the last 6 or 7 holes together, and my round went to pot. I get in my game better by myself. I enjoy playing with people as long as I know them though.
i play along 4 nights a week after work and it's the way i like it. every once in a while my wife will meet me at the course after work, but thats rare. anyways... i get my best practice in alone and if the course is empty i can get in 18 holes in 2 hours.
I don't see the fun of playing by yourself. The first time you get a hole in one by yourself you will wish someone was there to see it. Second of all ,can you see and find all your shots, I doubt it. Thirdly, where are you guys playing that no one else is on the course? Dont come to so. Florida cause you wont be able to play by yourself. There is a lineup at the first tee and besides you cant show anyone your game and meeting new people is great
Time on the range bashing a couple of baskets is great but sometimes I play 9 holes on my own instead if possible. I play better shots as well when i'm on the course.
Theres a time factor as well. I love the game but spending 5 + hours on course in a fourball is just too slow for me. I can play 18 in 3 hours or so on my own which is great as I cannot afford to spend that much time on the course.
I play alone about once every three months. Usually on a weekday afternoon when most are working. I enjoy the peace too. I also usually play great but no one ever believes me. If I hit a hole in one I would still be proud even if no one else saw it. Can there be anything better than on a cool fall weekday afternoon, playing by yourself, while taking in all the beuty of the fall landscape while you are having the round of your life? I say not.

I am a member at one of the top public courses in Maine and as long as you go over in the early evening, you can play alone and pretty much have the entire course to yourself, most of the time.
I wouldn't join a course where I didn't have that option. Playing all the time on a course that resembles a sardine can is not fun to me. I want to be able to go to the first tee without even checking with the pro shop. So long as it is not the middle of the day, I can do that and I play a great course, not some dump.
