I love VJ's rhythm and classic golf swing. I've emulated that in my swing since I started playing golf and I always hit fades. But lately, I've been trying to hit draws, so now I have a 2 plane swing which starts out steep, and shallows out on the downswing, which gives me a nice penetrating draw. Not so much Furyk like, but more Jay Haas or Fred Couples.
1 plane... I think I rarely use my 5-iron, but consider it my 170-180 club depending upon conditions. It falls between a little 7-wood and a big 6-iron, both of which I'm more comfortable with.
two plane - coming well inside on the backswing, very flat at top of backswing, then falls more or less into plane on the downswing/follow through. Most often straight to slight draw... 5 iron about 185, just about all of which is carry, not more than about 5-10 feet of release on impact, unless green is nicely baked.
I hit my 5 iron about 180 avg. If I have a 180 yard shot to the green, and there's a lake behind the green, I'll hit it 210 with the same stroke that I was counting on 180. On the other hand, if there's a lake in front, and it needs 160 to carry, my 5 iron tends to go 158 (again, same 180 yard swing!).
