Scrambles

Just wondering how many of you play and enjoy playing in scrambles? I play in at least 5 most years and one local course even does a 9 hole weekly scramble that I play some of the time.

Also wondering what the best winning score you have ever seen is?

I've heard stories of 15 and 16 but the best I have seen was -14 and the team had two teaching pros. Usually -10 will get you the win at most of the heavily particapated ones I play in.

For anyone who doesn't know what a scramble is, it is a format where you have usually 4 players, though the format would work for any number of multiple players. It is pretty simple, everyone tees off on each hole but you only use one of them, the best one. Then everyone goes and hits from that spot and you repat all the way to the hole, even on the greens. That is why the scores can be so low because you get 4 looks at birdie or eagle if you get on in regulation. The one catch is usually that you have to get at leat 2 drives from everyone. I've played in some where it was 3. This brings strategy into the game instead of allowing teams to just follow a big bomber around all day.

Anyways, just curious about the feelings on this format. I actually think it would be a great format for the Ryder Cup but keep it at two man teams.

Two man scramble, Tiger and Furyk vs Sergio and Donald. That would be pretty cool IMO. Better than alternate shot.

I hate alternate shot. Playing it I mean. I don't mind it as a Ryder Cup format though but do think a scramble would be fun to watch.

I witnessed a -20 in a local qualifier for the Oldsmobile Scramble several years ago. There were a couple of 340 yard par 4's driven. I think that group did well at the national event, as I recall.

I like a scramble, if the teams are even, or at least close so that it is fair.

I play in several a year, if one of my friends invites me to join in. Have seen too much "creative scorekeeping" to make it a regular part of my golfing endeavors.

I work 6 days a week. I wish I had time for scrambles, as I used to enjoy them very much. Great fun.

About twice a year.....spring and fall (next weekend). We play 27 holes. Best I've seen was -23. They pay out for 1st, 4th, 8th, and 12th. This gives other groups a chance to cash. Have cashed a couple times, but not 1st.

My company tourney has always had the scramble format. Lots of fun playing with one coworker and a couple of friends. That's the only tournament I play every year, and the lowest I've ever seen is -18.

Once every month or so I'm asked to join a group of two foursomes who play every Saturday morning. They play a scramble, one foursome vs. the other. They wager on 9 hole scores, and 18 hole score, as well as closest to pin on par 3's, closest to the pin on par 5's, within the "flag" in regulation on all holes, sandies, birdies, etc...

I really enjoy the format for a change, and the wagers are small enough that the most I've ever seen anyone win/lose is less than $10, which always goes toward paying for lunch and waitress tip.

I played in my first scramble just a couple of weeks ago. Pretty fun, and our team ended up -6 (out of the running; winners were -14,-10,-9). I was one of the weaker guys in our foursome, so one other guy and I would tee off first and try to get something "safe" on the fairway. Then the big hitters were free to really go for it.

It was a charity event, so they were selling mulligans (2 for $10) which came in handy.

The only way to win one of those charity scramble type events is to cheat. I'm saying that I do, but I can almost guarantee that the guys who are 17,18 under are cheating somewhere out there.
