Anyone here a member of a Long Drive team or compete in Long Drive events? I saw a guy at my range last friday "practicing" and it got me thinking... What DO they do to practice? Are they just trying different club/shaft combinations or is there an actual method to their madness?
With NO aspirations on being a long drive guy (I like my joints too much), this is more of a curiosity than anything.

I saw one guy practising by hitting 3 irons over a 40 foot net 280 yards away. Yikes.
PTP (Point To Ponder): I told they guys at one of my old dregs about a story of a long driver that used to mount a telephone directory between 2 metal masts about 6 feet off the ground and whack a golf ball right through it - a kind of show he did. "No way!", "Impossible!", "Yea, an Isle of Man directory!" etc. echo'd through the bar as I was shot down in flames. Until I brought the (high-speed) pic from the article (taken just as the ball came bursting through the book) and showed the guys. "Wow!", "Unbelievable!" etc. they suddenly whispered in amazement as they scrutinized the image. Anyone else seen this feat?

I remember seeing Art Sellenger do that trick. Any of you math guys wish to give us a formula to determine the minimum ball velocity required to penetrate a phone book of X number of pages? I guess I have something to work on here at the office... lol
I played a round with a kid that was aspiring to be a long drive competitor. Pretty good player. He hit one 330 yards, but man was he inconsistent. He maybe hit 1/5 good drives.

Then he is on par with the rest of the LD'ers... 1/5 is all they need.
Once this year at the range there was long driver (or suppose to be one) getting ready for a trounament by blasting balls at the range with his what looked to be about a 60 inch driver. With every swing he was almost falling over and would let out a big GGGGGGGRRRRUUUUUUNNNNNTTTTTTTTTTTT with every swing. Funny thing was he wasn't hitting the ball any farther with his driver than I do and there is no way I could ever think about being a long driver.

Golf Digest a few months ago had an interview with one of the long drive champions....I don't remember his name. He said he hits hundreds of golf balls every day.
I do long drive competitions and I hit about 2 buckets a day with all drivers, when I am getting ready for an event...I have a bunch of different drivers with different shaft, head, loft, length combinations....Depending on the wind conditions for the day!
