I don't even know. I've not played more than 18 for a long time, but when I was younger I could throw a rock and hit the nearest golf course, which I was a member at, so I'd go over in the morning, break for lunch, and back at it till dark. Hard to tell how many holes I played.
As a kid on caddie's day, we'd arrive at the course at 7:00 am, and wouldn't leave until 7:00 pm or darkness. I'd say 54 holes was my max.
However, I once caddied 54 holes carrying doubles! It was ~40 years ago. I was EXHAUSTED, but was proud of the $40 I brought home. Back then it was normal to get $6/bag for 18, and a $1 or $2 tip was good.
Did a 72 hole charity gig five years ago, a texas scramble over four different courses AND carrying our own bags. On the first tee at 0600 hrs for a shotgun start......... very, very tiring.... swings were getting flatter as the day wore on and I couldn't bend down to tie my golf shoes at the start of the fourth round. Raised a princely sum for a local childrens hospital but could barely walk the next couple of days.
I started to play golf in my early 30s, and I have never had the luxury of time to play more than that (I also have never been on a golf-vacation, which sounds like a pretty good opportunity to play more).
36 holes last season in Myrtle Beach. I loved it, because frankly I could play all day if I had to. I was tired toward the end, mostly from mental fatigue.

Same thing... I walked 72 for charity last year on a very hilly course with a few obnoxious walks between greens-tee too. The worst part is that I carried all 14 clubs the whole time too. I was a last second replacement for a guy who backed out, the other three guys were people that I used to work with. One used to be on tour in the early 80's, and the other two are very good local amateurs. So we had a ridiculous 72 hole match going on. Fortunately being the "worst" in the group(I was playing at a 4 then), I was paired with the ex-pro so after about a half hour of accounting after the round(s) it ended up being worth my while. 7:00 AM start, 7:00P PM finish.
Our group of 4 walked 54 holes, but we really weren't trying to see how many we could play. We were just having a good time and strolling around the course at our usual pace. That was a good many years ago when wives and family obligations weren't an issue.

somewhere around 40...my best number in the shortest amount of time is probably like 30 holes in 3.5 hours...we only get to play free golf after 4:30 pm...and more like 6:30 pm during the summer months.
