I don't mind starting in the cold (30's) in a tournament if it is supposed to be in the 50's or more in the afternoon. I did this recently. For just going out and playing for fun, I normally won't play unless it's in the 50's already.
Normally, playing in the cold isn't an option here anyway. I will be snowboarding soon and if anything, there will be cross country skiing on the courses that allow it.
A couple of years ago, I was snowboarding during a huge powder day Halloween. This year, we're not getting an early start on the ski season, but it looks like the week after this week will be cold. It might be in the 60's over the next few days.
yesterday i played 18 in the low 40's but ive played in the low 30's before...
Same here. Didn't get a little rough until the clouds got thick and the wind picked up.
I walk and carry...what I use to do is wear oven mitts and slide them off to swing then right back on. Works great on those really brisk mornings when rubber tees from the range is the only way to tee it up...LOL
It was 38* when I teed off this morning, but was @ 50* by the 6th hole. AS long as there is no precipitation I will play if the course is open.
That answers the question for me... As long as the course is open, I will be out there. I normally only carry a pair of those chemical handwarmers in my pockets. No gloves, they get in the way. I do wear one of those headband earwarmers and a cap if it is blustery. Lots of times in the winter, we gather in the clubhouse and wait for the frost to burn off the greens so we can go play. My group will normally be the first out.
Playing on Sunday as long as there's no snow. Cold isn't the stopper, if you ask me...With thermal underwear, sweater/pants and a rainsuit if it's really cold, I'll brave the weather as long as the course is open...I've even played in snow before, but most courses won't let you on if there's snow nowadays.
As a fellow golfer playing in Colorado, I don't mind the cold too much, as long as it's not windy and the sun is shining. Around here, if it's in the 40's and the sun is shining, it's perfect for playing golf. I'd rather be a little cold, than sweating to death in the hot sun during the summer. 90 degrees in the shade is worse than 40 degrees in the sun if you ask me. And if you walk the course, the walking will keep you warm, and you don't freeze from the breeze you get when you're riding in an open cart.
Here in Houston I've heard of the 60° rule. As in, if it's colder, they don't play.
I'm from New England and find that laughable. In fact, that's quasi shorts weather for me.
I once had to quit down here when it was in the 30s and misting. The humidity on the gulf coast is murder in the summer AND makes it more cold in the winter.
I always walk & pull 'em when it gets below 50*. The wind from riding probably drops the perceived temp another 10* or so and I can't stand those enclosed carts.

I agree about those enclosed carts. I played with a guy who has his own cart and had it enclosed, had a heater in it too. Getting in and out with those zippers was a pain in the butt and the heater would run you out of the cart in a few minutes. It just made it seem colder when you got out of it. I finally ended up walking most of the course and just using him like a motorized caddy...
In NW Florida it doesn't get really cold very often. We have a small number of days when play is delayed to let the frost melt on the course, but even then the temperature usually rises into the 40s. In college my roommate (we were both on the golf team) and I teed off when it was -8f and walked off the 18th green at -14f. We were probably lucky to survive. Didn't know what hypothermia was and couldn't have even spelled it. As for wind, what's a little breeze? Played in Labrador a few years ago with 40 MPH winds gusting to over 60. Very challenging, but also a lot of fun.
