I havent played since late september. Its not that its cold out, its also windy and the ground is hard as a rock. If any particular day happens to be warmer and calmer than usual, i'll think about goin out for 9.
I dont really need to worry about how cold it gets but how hot it gets. I live in Arizona so I can play year round if i can deal with the 110 degree plus weather here.
I'll play during the winter if it's not too windy. The course is usually frozen solid from mid-December until mid-January............. we use rubber tees that you don't push into the ground. Every shot has to be teed and it's not advisable to try and take a divot, the ground is solid. Still, the water hazards offer trick-shot opportunites and all bunkers are ground-under-repair!
The course has winter-greens and the holes are cut about twice the size of a normal hole (about 10 inches diameter) - sounds easy, but the ball bounces all over the place on the frozen greens.
We're going out in the morning, and forecasted low is 36. It is supposed to be in the 60's by 1 or so. We'll see how it goes! Been a long time since I've been out this cold.
40 degrees and sunny is perfect as far as I'm concerned. I've played when the greens were frozen and the ball bounced like it was hitting concrete. Several years back a friend of mine and I wanted to play every week, at least once, through the whole Winter. We managed to pull it off...but there were many days we just looked at each other like we were nuts. One thing that helps playing Winter golf is playing with 80 compression balls.
Now the weather is changing. What is the coldest and how windy would you recommend playing untill?
Playing on Sunday as long as there's no snow. Cold isn't the stopper, if you ask me...With thermal underwear, sweater/pants and a rainsuit if it's really cold, I'll brave the weather as long as the course is open...I've even played in snow before, but most courses won't let you on if there's snow nowadays.
