Myself and some of my playing buddies go away for several golf trips each year but we never go to the Usa , well I would like to remedy this and could do with some advice. We are all reasonable players ie single figures a few mid figures and we can push the boat out for a trip to the us so i ask the following
1) where should we play if we come for a week
2) any companies that arrange this sort of thing .
Most of us have played all the open venues over here and would love to do the same over there but i am not sure it is so easy in the states.
Here are a couple of links to some courses in the State of Alabama, you can play year around here.
The courses I would recommend are the following:
Capitol Hill courses.......The National Wide Tour is held here each year.
Ross Bridge.................Champions Tour.
Farm Links Golf Club.......great course to play
I know there will be other members recommend courses in South Carolina, Florida and other places but I suggest that you not pass up some great courses here in Alabama.
I would agree with EDSGolf that Myrtle Beach may be your best bet. They have hundres of golf courses within an hours drive and most of the hotels have golf packages for their guests.
thats very helpful chaps thanks but what my partners and i want to do is play the great championship courses of the us , for example this june we played KIngsbarns , Loch Lomond and St Andrews. Any advise on how to play Bethpage , winged foot , east lake etc etc .
bethpage is a public course i think. just book well in advance.
pebble beach definately is public, again book in advance and be prepared to pay a fair bit... but I completely agree with your strategy - is much better to come to the states and play a few really great courses than a load of average ones. And pebble is an amazing experience... don't miss it.
pebble beach is good because you have spyglass hill right there which you can also pay to play i think and it's a pretty good championship course.
the famous private clubs you really need to know someone to get on. as long as they're not top 10 courses then you might get on with a nice letter from your home club's secretary sent in advance... but this will only work if your home club is fairly impressive.
Is loch lomond not members invites only? And it's got lots of members that also have memberships in america. If so ask whoever took you if they know anyone from a good club in america they could put you in contact with. If yes then write these people a letter explaining that you were hoping to play some good courses, and after that it's just down to luck.
From Golf Digest a year ago, 6 buddies trips, each high low and mid prices. I would include Myrtle Beach in there as well. If money is no object I'd probably do Monterey or Pinehurst.
You'll probably make out even better given your advantageous exchange rate.
Flash is correct in saying that a number of the US Open courses are public if you can afford the high dollar prices.
I visit the USA every year on the East side - VA, GA, FLA, SC and ALA.
If you're on a trip with a group and want to play some first class courses, I would recommend the Trent Jones Trail in Alabama.
The courses are beautiful and the service is great.
You can fly into Atlanta and drive from there to the nearest trail course.
I think you can get a Trail Card which gives you a deal on green fees.
