Casual golf...when someone misses a gimme putt (that's good)
I ran into a problem recently among casual friends where one of them said 'that's good' to a short putt and that person then attempted to putt it in the hole, but was told 'don't miss it' when it became obvious they were putting it, and then proceeded to lip the putt, and suggest the putt was 'good'. However, the person was told that it was an extra stroke. The person looked startled and said, you said 'that was good'? It was stated that, it's either 'that's good' and pick it up, or if you strike at it, then that stroke counts. But you can't have it both ways.
Anyone come across this situation before.....what do you think?
With guys I've played with often, we usually let the "that's good" stand, even if the guy decided to putt and misses. If there's a skin riding on his putt or it may affect another bet, he isn't gonna get a "that's good" to begin with. If I'm playing with strangers, and one says "that's good" in an effort to speed up play, but the player plays it anyway, the actual strokes played are gonna be counted, unless of course everyone decides otherwise.
2-4/7 Concession of Stroke Refused by Player and Withdrawn by Opponent; Player Then Putts and Misses
Q. In a match between A and B, A putts and his ball comes to rest near the hole. B concedes A’s next stroke. A says: “No. I haven’t holed out yet.” B says: “OK. Go ahead and putt.” A putts and misses. In such circumstances, is the concession invalidated?
A. No. When B conceded A’s next stroke, A had completed the hole. Concession of a stroke may not be declined or withdrawn — see Rule 2-4.
Thanks for quoting the rule - if you are playing in a match in which ANY putt can be conceded, then any putt that is conceded by an opponent is IN - everything after that is practice - you cannot miss a conceded putt. In the Ryder Cup this has happened numerous times, but the concession BY RULE always stands...
Yea, but you're quoting Match Play rules, which don't count in this circumstance, imo.

If I were in charge of the rules, putting a conceded putt would forfeit the concession. Not picking up a conceded putt strikes me as ungrateful and somewhat unsportmanlike. And nothing leaves a more sour taste than seeing a conceded putt missed.
That said, the rules are the rules, so I will simply have to get over that!
In casual rounds with friends, if the putt is a foot or 18 inches it's considered a gimmie. If the guy still gets up, takes his time, lines it up and misses, I take that as him telling me "I don't want any gimmies, I play it down", so as far as I'm concerned, that's an additional stroke. However if I say it's a gimmie, and he just walks up and backhands it to the hole and misses, I'm not going to make him count that, even though techincally it's a stroke. In my judgement, it's all in the intent of the stroke.

I agree with NikeRep and Big. I happens once every round or so with our normal group. Someone will lag one up there close and after a "it's good" is called out they will continue on to backhand it toward the hole or something and miss it. We still count it as good. This is when we KNOW it's a makable putt about 99.99 percent of the time if they had actually not goofed around.
