the wonderful game of golf

I started playing golf passionately last year, April 2005. Anyway I practiced as much as I could and improving tremendously and the last two times out I shot a 78 and 77. I broke 90 at the end of the season last year and this was a goal of mine this year to break 80 by the end of this years season. Just wanted to tell everyone as I am proud of myself. Thanks for reading.

If I continue shooting there is another story, probably just a fluke.

Are you my twin? Wow.

I too started playing in April 05. I had been playing school baseball for a while, but I soon realized that I had a passion for golf that I didn't have for baseball. When I started I was awful, probably shooting in the high 100s. I dropped to around a 15 handicap by the end of the season, in October. I had broken 90 2 or 3 times, with the best being an 87.

Forward to this year. I played my first year of school golf, and from April to now have dropped down to just over a 9 handicap. (9.3 i believe) I've broken 80 5 times, although all at my home course. (77, 3 78's, 79) My average score was just under 84. My goal is to drop down to around a 5 or 6 by Spring time, and down to scratch by the following year. (lofty goals, i know)

Anyways, really sorry for the hijack, I just wanted to share some opinions by someone who's in a similar boat.

Fluke or no fluke, at least you know you have it in you currently, so hopefully you can continue to improve, even though those are solid scores. I'd be happy to post high 70's someday.

That's pretty much the same thing I'm trying to accomplish.

Congrats, my goal was to shoot consistently in the seventies by the end of this golfing season. I got that done about half way through the summer once I had a couple of lessons to get rid of the shanks. I was playing really good before and then bam hosel rockets just appeared out of nowhere. I had only seen this on Tin Cup but never knew it could happen this bad in real life. Once the pro got me back on plane I started playing well tee to green but my putting was letting me down. I stopped by golf galaxy one day and had my putter fitted and it made the biggest difference of anything I've ever done for my game. Soon enough I went from 79 to 84 down to a low of 74 and have stayed within a couple of strokes of that number ever since. Goal for next year is to shoot par consistently. I think my ball striking is there but I need to concentrate on sand play and course management to get to par. Good Luck everyone.

Just a silly question...my kid also hits off the tips, I've noticed when he moves up to the mens tees, just to change it around, his game doesn't get that much stronger. Yeah maybe a few more pars or birdies, but nothing shocking. Is this normal?

I find myself shooting around the same, but since I'm back farther I concentrate more than usual.

I usually actually shoot the same or better from the tips. The landing areas are wider for me from the tips. Most days my group plays one up from the tips though. Most holes it is usually a 1 club difference.

What do you mean by "hitting off the tips"? Are those the front tees?

...I'm still trying to break 90 this year and there's not much time left!
