I spent a majority of my life playing public courses, and never really considered myself the "country club" type.... That was up until two years ago, when I finally decided to test the waters. I fell in love with this place the moment I saw it.

A couple of things that have really impressed me is the course conditions and the pace of play. I've played over 100 rounds there since, and have yet to play a round longer than 4 hours and 15 minutes. The greens are true and quick, and the rough is fair but certainly challenging. The conditions are better than anything I've ever played.

The good thing is that my annual dues are so inexpensive compared to other places, I actually don't feel entitled to play every round there. I still get out once a week to play with a friend, and we play a host of courses throughout the season. But I must say that every round I play away from my homecourse, the more I look forward to coming back there to play. I admit that I'm spoiled.

I fully expected the typical hoity toity attitude that I've heard people reference the country club life before, but have yet to meet one person that isn't down to earth at my club. More than anything, I feel welcomed and appreciated there. For 2200 bucks each season, it's a no brainer.

I'm not against private clubs per se, and can see many advantages for business reasons, etc. I'd probably be willing to join one if I could get a golf-only membership, but they expect you to spend a minimum amount in the dining room and bar. I'm not a big drinker, might have a beer or two after a round, but more likely not. We also don't eat out that often. If a club had a decent membership initiation and dues, and would forego the minimums for other expenditures, I'd consider joining.

As it is here, in the summer months several private clubs offer golf access to people who purchase a summer golf card, which gives discount rates at many area courses. The card is usually good from May through October, costs about $60, and you save $7-10 per round. Many clubs also honor the card with special prices during the early part of the "high season", November through March. Since I'm only in it for the golf, I'll play private when I can without having to join the rest of the club.

PA PLAYA, where are you in Pa? I grew up in the Poconos. I've played a bunch of courses there. I used to (back in the 60's) caddy at Water Gap, Shawnee and Glenbrook. Never interested in playing then. Wish I had started then

If I had the cash I would do it in a heartbeat. This is something I am working towards but for now me and my handicap will play the public circuit.

I never really had the desire nor saw the need. I suppose if money weren't an object I might join a few clubs and enjoy the perks mentioned while still satisfying my need for variety. We belonged to a CC when I was a teen. I swam on the club team and played occassionally. It was a nice course but I would've become bored playing it exclusively. I never really noticed the members being any better company on average than those I met/meet on public courses. The CC certainly had it's share of jerks. Perhaps I've been lucky on the public courses or was unlucky in my CC experience.

I play public courses b/c that's what I can afford and there are a few very good public courses in my area that I play regularly. However, I do get to play the private courses in my area pretty often and they are w/o a doubt far more enjoyable to play. The condition of the private courses are so pristine - the fairways, bunkers, rough and greens are always in such great condition.
If I could afford a private club, I would join one in a heartbeat, but i would have shop around some to see A) how much I like the course and B) how I would fit in with the members.

I live in a beautiful town on Long Island, NY There are two wonderful country clubs in my town. One club has a 7 year waiting list and would cost $60,000.00 to join and then around $14,000.00 per year from then on. The other country club costs 300% more. I play at the town "Muni" which overlooks Long Island Sound. It is magnificent, and it costs me $16.00 for 18 holes weekdays, 29.00 for 18 holes on week-ends and holidays. Guess you know where I play!
