I think the "IST" suffix is under-used. "Hi Hank, this is Walt, he's a golfist."
"Pleasure to meet you Walt, I'm a florist."

What about when people ask you... "How did you golf today?"

I know "golf" can be used as a noun, adjective, AND verb, but when people ask me that it's like someone ran their fingernails over a chalk board.

Also... when people ask "Do you wear plaid pants?"...
I know Parnevik and Poulter are trying to bring those back, but seriously... lol

Why? In a semi-quote from Billy Madison: "we have all become dumber for listening to you" That's what I would have told the guy. Golfers play golf!

BTW, when you look at our use of words, it can get pretty confusing

the prefix re- means to do again, right? What about replenish, repeat, & repent? Can you plenish, peat, or pent?

Actually "plenish" is a word.

Sorry, I didn't find it in my copy of Webster's before I posted... ?

Just found it... what I read says it is a Scottish word meaning to "fill up, stock"

I stand corrected. I do not believe it is in common English usage however.

Nope. I looked it up too. I wouldn't have known it was even a word.

Just because a word starts with certain letters doesn't mean it is a prefix! Could just be how the word is spelled.

My office manager would ask me "How was golf today (or yesterday)?" and I'd tell her, "Same as always - try to get ball in the cup with fewest strokes possible on 18 different holes." Then she'd say,"Well, how did you play?" to which I can't resist replying, "Well, usually I follow the Rules of Golf as put forth by the USGA."

I never use the term golfer for some reason, I just say I play golf. Golfer sounds like that's your profession, as in doctor, conductor, engineer

with me, if someone who golfs ask me if i'm a golfer or "was i golfing today", doesn't bother me, but if some who doesn't golf ask me the same questions, now i'm wondering where they're going with this or why they are asking.

How about just telling them to shut up? That's the approach I would take.

Hi,
sounds to me like another put down by folks who dont like/dont play golf, it happens when folks find out you play golf. Another one that kills me and I think I will scream if I hear it again is "Golf? a good walk spoiled "

I really don't care what they call me as long as they call me at the right tee time. I will "play golf", be "a golfer", or "golf my ball". I am not too concerned with the way the world views me, only in whether or not the golf course is open and playable. Everything else is fluff in the wind.

Clear?

I did not think "golfing" was a word. Preferable if the statement is ....there was no golf today..." imo ???

That was far more poetic than ANYTHING Tom Zart ever published...can I use that in my sig? (seriously).
