Unhappy golfer?

Need an opinion on people that play golf, are golfers or do they just play golf? This may have been posted before and I missed it.A couple friends asked me if I played much and I said "Being a golfer I play as much as I can".Thats where things went south. They said that people that play golf,"play golf",not are golfers.Their proof is that you never hear tennis players being called tennisers.Narrow minded I called them.Anyone else run into this (play golf, golfer)dispute?

To me 'golfer' is tolerable, but 'golfing' is not. It is the latter use (as a verb) that quite often creates disputes.

Weird post.

I hear 'golfer' and 'golfing' used all the time. Quite common everywhere I've lived (TN, MS, & NC). Then again, we've never been too particular about our grammar down here. :)

Well tennis player, ie; someone who plays tennis, just rolls off the tongue better than tenniser. That would be my guess regarding the difference in terminology. Whatever you do don't ask them what the term tennis PLAYER means... their heads may explode. If your friends are serious, I'd suggest that they may need another hobby to occupy their minds ... or maybe do some volunteer work or something... sheesh.

or you could just suggest that they look it up in any dictionary.

I dearly hope that they're pulling your leg, though.

This golfer played golf yesterday, but there was no golfing today as the rain was steady, all day.

Clear?

BTW: Bowl - Bowler / Ski - Skier / Dive - Diver / Hunt - Hunter / Skate - Skater / Hike - Hiker, etc., etc...

Weird frends that see golf as a waste of time, just walking around hitting at a little ball to no net or anything of importance.

Yeah, as NikeRep07 said, you can make any sport sound silly and a waste of time if you break it down like that. BTW, what is the consequence of a net (or "home plate" or an "end zone", etc...) and why is it more consequential than a little hole ?
These are the questions that try mens souls.
They're just yanking your chain. Don't let 'em sweat ya.

Your friends are just messing with you. Sounds like they don't care for golf though, well that's their loss. At least you know you can easily beat em I bet .
