I have friends who dont like golf and when I bring it up I do get made fun of some times, my favorite has to be when someone calls them "Golf Sticks", instead of clubs, that makes me laugh, someone even called them "Golf Rods", i died when I heard that one, what do your non golf friends say about you, or the game in itself, (Thread itself should be quite humorous)
Years ago, the golf stereotype was much worse than it is today. Golf was not cool 20 years ago. ;)
Times have changed. Golf is cool now. It has evolved into a sport not just for the privileged few, but anyone who has the time to invest. I have more people asking me when I'm going to find the time to teach them how to play than I have people making light of the hobby I love. :)

I chip at a piece of 4" PVC in my yard with a Vokey...this girl at the store asked me "What is that you play in your yard, croquet?" She wasn't even blonde.
I had that same type of thing happen me awhile back (see thread GOLFER)and got some good resposes to the thread.I have seen them since then and challenged them to play nine holes with me this Spring($$$ on line)to show them what the game is really like, they took me up on it ,so Spring will tell.I`m hoping that at least one of them will get hooked. You might try a similar track.
Non-golf friends? They are the ones to be pitied and ridiculed! Do you have any non-eating, anorexic friends who tease you about having lunch? Any non-showering friends who give you hard time about being clean? How about some un-educated friends who give you smack about learning stuff? Oh wait, you already mentioned non-golfing friends. so that covers that last question!
Even if Samuel L. Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Will Smith, Adam Sandler, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Teri Hatcher, Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Alice Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Jordan, Pete Sampras, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, and a host of other celebrities decide golfing is no longer worth their time, it will not affect my enjoyment and love for the game! No one else's opinion matters to me when it comes to what I like and what makes me happy. No one can decide that but me!
Most of my friends who argue with me about golf are women and its usually the "golf is not a sport" argument.
I usually challenge them on the course and tell them I will give them 2-4 strokes a hole and we walk 36 holes straight. My father is a member at a non-walker friendly course and its quite a workout. By the end of the day you have walked at lease 9 miles.
My friends usually end up with blisters on their hands and feet as well as back and shoulder cramps. They usually dont bring it up again.
I was one of those non-golfing friends 3 years ago. I constantly made fun of my friends about what clothes they wear and how life at the country club was treating them. Now, my friend (who got me into golf) calls me the "hypocrite". Whenever I bring up golf in front of him he dredges up the hypocrite line. I don't think he appreciates the fact that I have surpassed his level of addiction.

Great point. Golf is much cooler now.
I am down to one friend who makes fun of me, the rest have taken up golf, and are hooked. And the one friend who makes fun of me is really missing out. He is a Wall Street exec, and would probably have access to some of the best courses around, charity events, etc, if he took up the game.
Yeah I make fun of my cowboy friends, nah golfers are respected where I come from
I used to drive a pick up, wear cowboy boots and jeans.. I got out of the truck in one of those oil change places and they guy working there saw my clubs in the rear seat... In an almost mocking tone he said, "Cowboy Boots and golf clubs?"
I said, "Yep and in Texas they even sell boots with golf spikes already attached."
Just one more example of the elitist attitude some people have about the game.
It's kinda funny, years ago I lived in Texas and wore a suit most days, but when I would travel on business to the Northeast, I would don my boots, jeans and an old "McCloud" style coat. It was amazing what you could get away with when you were dressed like you might whip out a six-shooter and clean up the place. Ha Ha...
They know I'm a good player so they don't make fun of me. Although I live in Scottsdale where it's the golf Mecca. It's kind of expected that if you live here you play golf or know of golf.
Yo Q School,
Dude we have alot in common....I used to wear cowboy boots,
jeans, a cowboy hat and carry a six-shooter.....the only difference was I was only five years old!......Just tell those non-golfing nimrods to guard their ignorance, because once you lose it, it's hard to get back.......
Juls "Just tell her Ringo"
Ringo "Just be cool honey bunny
just be cool"
