Where should I play in San Diego

Well, my wife is dragging me down to San Diego at the end of March for a little family vacation (I guess I can't complaint too much though since I am spending a week in the BVIs with the guys earlier that month). We are going to be staying at a resort on Mission Bay and God willing I will be able to get in a round or two in between Sea World, Lego Land and whatever else we find to do down there. It is winter here in Washington so it will have been about five months since I picked up my clubs and in addition to that I am a mediocre to borderline poor (but improving) golfer. However, I am serious about the game and am respectful of whoever I end up playing with. With that said I am looking for a course that is not too pretentious where whoever I get paired up with will be more likely to forgive my occassional (ok maybe frequent) shot out to left field but I do want a nice course though - after all I am going to be on vacation and I don't mind paying a bit for a nice round of golf. I will probably be able to play mid-week if that makes any difference.

So, anyone have any recommendations on some good courses for me that are close to the Mission Bay area? Thanks.

Matt

I can't recommend it based on experience because I have yet to try it; but Torrey Pines is on my S.D. to-do list when I'm in the area again. It's in north La Jolla...I hear it's a very good course..

Torry Pines is tough to get a tee time on, but it can be done. I've played Steele Canyon (three 9 hole tracks combined to make different 18 hole setups) and also Singing Hills which is now Sycuan Resort, which has two 18 hole courses plus an exec 9 par. It's about ten minutes away from Steele Canyon. They are both located in El Cajon which is a half hour or so inland from Mission Bay.

Here's a map of most of the public courses. http://www.showtimegolf.com/sandiego/courses/map.php

Try here

Try the Coronado Golf course (about 10 miles away). It won't cost a fortune, and is a fun track. There are no courses in the Mission Bay area. You can also go up to Torrey Pines, but be prepared to pay $140, get there very early to sign up as a single, and wait a while to get out.

Thanks for the replies - the map is really helpful Stiofan. I would love to get on Torrey Pines but getting eighteen holes in with a set tee time will be tight by itself. If I have to wait for an open slot the timing will probably just not work out for this trip. I might try Steele Canyon and maybe one other course. Maybe I'll take a gamble and drive out to Torrey Pines mid-week and see if I get lucky with an opening. From what I am seeing and from what I have paid at other places, in general San Diego has pretty good values as far as tee times go. Maybe I will need to plan a golf trip down there in the future. Thanks again for the info and if anyone has anything to add that would be great too.
