A question that I've always wondered...
From watching golf as a kid, one of my enduring memories is the players who tucked their trousers (pants to you Americans :) ) into their socks...
So why do all courses I look up say that players are not allowed to do this?

Yea, a lot of golf courses over here in the UK stipulate that it isn't allowed.

We're talking "Payne Stewart"-type golf knickers, right? Why would a course care if you wore those or not?

I sure hope it isn't a commando-style-mandatory golf course!

I have no idea, it's just the dress code for that particular course. Many also forbid baseball style caps. :/

Really, the only dress rules I've seen around here are collared shirts and sometimes no shorts.

Most of the courses let you wear what is comfortable, they frown on too short shorts and tank tops tho. They post some rules about collared shirts, but don`t say anything tho if you wear a t-shirt style. The courses are pretty laid back, come and enjoy mode,
except our resort that is real fussy

I've seen courses that were "No shorts, no denim, collared shirts only" but never "no knickers, no ball caps." That's not a place I'd want to play.

Aren't the pants in question called "plus fours"? Never seen a course with rules against them. Can't imagine any course refusing access to Payne Stewart back when he was alive.

It is the custom in quite a few places, particularly in Ireland, to prohibit knickers. I have no idea why, but it's the code.

Called 'Plus fours' over in Australia. To my knowledge Rodger Davis (aust) and Payne Stewart (usa) are the most famous well performed golfers to wear them. Stewart Ginn (aust) wore them many years ago as a young professional. In time they will come back again.
