Jack will always be the best ever.....Tougher era, tougher equip, etc. Not a knock on Tiger, but it's the current state of the PGA that makes too many others complacent.

He's amazing!!! Single handedly changed the game of golf, creating a bigger gallery/followers of golf and has inspired many others to play the game of golf that normally wouldn't have (myself). I think the strength of field is stronger now than in Jacks era. Just too many big names these days that all have a chance to win, thats why I think he is and will be the best ever.

This is a good debate. Jack said in an article that he thinks that as a whole, players today are better than in his era. But, the top ten from his time would beat the top ten of today. Guys now are just fine with finishing in the top ten (or top 125 for the year, for that matter), If you needed eagle to get in a playoff, but dropping to fourth place would cost you $200K, would you go for the green or lay up? There is less pressure to win now - just play well and earn a million.

Didn't the top 80 last year all earn one million? In Jack's time, the 80th guy was probably sleeping in his car. I know that Tiger could adapt to any equipment, but those guys of the past were hitting 1 irons and persimmon.

Tiger's mental game is what separates him from the rest, Just as Jack's in his day. If they were both in their prime, with similar equipment...be a great match!

i like this debate also.....since the time of the two is pretty far apart...i know the pressure of winning is not as high, but if they really love the game they want to win to get their name up there to be one of the greatest...i do not think it is all about money with most of the guys. Especially Tiger.

I think Tiger is at the top of the game when it comes to two aspects. His mental game is top notch and he's physically built. I don't know if he's better than Jack since I didn't watch much golf during that era and even if I did, I think it would be inconclusive.

I would say Tiger. It would be close on the second round Jack comes back on last three holes, but he missed a 10 foot put and Tiger won.

what a great question..........for me, i didn't care for the guy when he first came out......it was nothing that he did to make me not like him, it's just the way the media is these days, there was so much hype before he ever hit his first ball, i was just sick of it......but after years of watching him, he's definitely my favorite golfer now......from his creativity of shots, the way he performs under pressure, his unbelieveable drive to win, all the way to the amount of money and time he donates to charity.........he's just an amazing golfer and i think he's great for the GAME of golf........sure, he blows up on the course every now and then, and says a few words i wouldn't want my children to see him saying, but that's the type of competitiveness i enjoy watching from someone who's supposed to be the #1 player in the world...........i for one, am looking forward to watching him play for many more years to come.

p.s. as far as a debate on who's better b/w him and jack, that could easily be a whole other topic, but i know i wouldn't put money on either.....how could you go home and tell your wife you bet against jack nicklaus?

Well..Both were the best of their times..and in my mind..thats enough said..I think if you handed tiger persimmon woods and inferior golf equipment that jack used..he could go out and still tear it up..0 questions asked...Tigers mental game is THE BEST by far..he can hit any shot that he can picture..Jack is for sure the greatest ever..But correct me if im wrong..but didnt Jack SAY that Tiger was the best ever???..As for this era..YES..he IS..But no-one in my book will EVER compare to Jack..

I totally agree with this... but for the sake of this thread and for entertainment, please carry on with the Jack vs. Tiger debate.

I agree there is better equipment now for tiger, BUT isn't all his competitors using this new equipment also?? I think equipment can be used as an "excuse" for things like driving distance, or even lower scores but when you are talking about winning against competition (that is using the same equipment you are) they discussion has to be about the players!! With that being said. I agree that Tiger vs. Jack would be a great match with either eras equipment. I say tiger 2 & 1

Most the time he is the best putter
the best ball striker
and is the most focused
certainly the most talented

Tiger wins 24% of the tourneys he enterers + comes through in the majors almost everytime ... amazing

He is the best ... ever and that includes Jack , who didnt have the short game or competition Tiger faces. Few good athletes even played golf during Jack's heyday , now millions play it.

btw, Tiger's handicap was taken by some golf association ... it was +7.6 , ya thats right plus 7.6 ... thats on PGA courses and in tourney's. No telling what it would be if his scores at Isleworth were taken since he routinely puts up a 59 or 60. The average PGA tour pro's handy's were + 3.8 .... so Tig would be given the best players in the world almost 2 shots a side .... I would still take Tiger

He is the best putter, especially under pressure, and the most focused, bot not the best ball striker. He's ranked 47th in ball striking, and 160th in driving accuracy. The only thing that keeps him drom winning 75% of tournaments is his driving.

I still say the competition was stiffer back then. Palmer, Player, Watson, Miller, Trevino, Crenshaw....Do you think today's group will go down in history as that strong a pack?
