Do most courses have a dress policy for men but not women?

This was a comment made by one the course managers recently 'we don't require women to wear collared shirts'. In addition, I recently saw on a warm weekend a female golfer that had a bare midriff kind of shirt on playing. So I was just curious if most courses enforce a dress code for men but have none for women?

I think this is often the case for many courses. I wouldn't say there is NO dress code policy for women but it is relaxed quite a bit.

In my personal experience, golf courses are more likely to have a code for women's wear. Usually the ladies dress code is more strict. We not only have regulations regarding collars and shirtsleeves, we also have regulations regarding shirt, shorts and skirt lengths and restrictions on waistbands (no lowrise, no elastic). Some courses permit shorts. Some say skorts (those hideous shorts with a skirt in the front & shorts in the back) are the only type of shorts permitted. Some say womens pants must be at least calf length. Some say skirts only.

My very slim and elegant mother in law was turned away once for wearing a modest designer outfit with shorts (no women in trousers permitted!) Naturally Dad tossed her the car keys and said see ya in about four hours! She's never really enjoyed golf since.

A girlfriend was not permitted to tee up until she presented her shoes top and bottom for inspection. They were checking for women in street shoes. Her male companions did not have to show their shoes.

Most of my friends agree that the dress codes are often designed specifically to weed out women. I don't have an opinion on the subject as I really don't mind asking every time I play a new course. My only grump is when they have a strict dress code for the lady golfers and half naked cart girls and golf geishas. As a mother, I always worry about them catching cold!

One of the last courses I played had a dress code that simply asked that all patrons "Dress with respect for the game and other players" to what extent of strict or unstrict this is... I have no idea, but no one was under dressed or overdressed. So I guess there was more to it than met the eyes.

Most of the places with dress codes I've been to usually have dress codes for both men and women. The dress code for women may be relaxed in certain aspects such as a collared shirt as you brought up or a hat policy where men can't wear hats in the clubhouse but women are allowed to do so.

Personally, I dont care. I dont wear shorts ever to play golf even in Florida heat, but as far as women's dress in concerned as long as there not wearing jeans, or some outfit they would wear to a club Im fine with it.

from my experience it's stricter for men than women, but I play mostly new courses out here...

IMO it should be collared shirt+no jeans everywhere (that's how I always play), but that's just me I guess...
