The only type of player I have played with that gets under my skin is a guy who adjusts his ball every time. No matter if the ball is in the middle of the fairway, he just takes his club and moves it around a little. He suggested we play for money once, and I let him know that every time he moved his ball or adjusted his lie I was counting it as a stroke against him. Just drives me absolutely crazy!

I tend to play better with players that are about my skill. Too good and I'm intimidated and too bad I tend to play down to their level. Also, I like playing with guys that are cool tempered and down to earth. I have a friend that I play with quite a bit and he gets angry very quickly, and I almost never play well with him throwing his clubs. Also, many times when I play with him I have to spend time fixing the course if he damages it in any way and that takes away concentration from my own game.

You have to learn to deal with playing with better players by using it as a learning experience. I, personally love to play with better players because it improves my play as well and I love the challenge to try and beat them even if it is only a couple of holes. I do agree that it is sometimes tougher to play with players way below your level but one can adjust and work on specifics or just give them a stroke or two in the back of your mind to make it more challenging. Club throwers and quick tempers are sometimes a big distraction and I guess all of us have to find what works for each of us in how to deal with it. I used to get really upset with myself over stupid shots but what helped me is to realize that even the pros mess up shots.

I totally agree with this. I find I play my best with better players because it makes me want to "rise to the occasion." I play as a single a lot and often times, I will play match play in my head without the guy knowing.
I can understand the nervousness about playing with better players, though. I think I had the same problem when I first started to play and I had no idea whether I would pop up my drive 40 yards or hit it in the center of the fairway.

I think all of us go through that phase in which we are embarressed to have better players see us mess up a wonderful game and we also feel that we might be taking them out of their game and frustrating them from skulling balls over the green or taking 4 shots to get on from 90 yds. out. Luckily most of us progress enough that although we may not play as well as a single digit handicapper we can still perform some great shots now and then and not hold up play other than an occational bad shot into trouble locations. Most of all of us should remember that very few start out as low handicap golfers in the beginning. Although I prefer to play with good golfers I still try to show patience with those that haven't progressed as far. When my head starts to swell from thinking I'm almost there I just play a super tight course and it brings me back to reality.
Playing with my dad is the best. And You'd think i'd feel pressured to play good, with him hitting 290-350 drives(on the good ones) but i really enjoy the quality time. I also play with my uncle, grandpa and second uncle. I havent had a chance to play with a stranger.
A thing that always bothers me are players that rush behind you, Constantly waiting at the tee right after you tee off. It gets me annoyed and nervous specially around the green because i like doing even tap ins.
Only one thing - I hate playing with anyone who throws off my rhythm. For me that usually means someone that is unusually deliberate and slow. I am not a super fast player, but there are some guys who just take forever to take a shot. Don't get me wrong, more power to them, but I like to play and play best with players that generally have the same relative tempo as me - helps a lot.
Not much else bugs me - trash talk, pre-shot routines, talkative or not is all ok. Just don't play silly slow.
The only people that affect me are random people who are always in a hurry for some reason. They give you four footers because they would rather wait an extra 30 seconds behind the next group which is still teeing off. Or they walk ahead to the green after they've hit their shot and then thoughts of accidentally hitting them start entering my head.
So true, I don't like playing with those type guys.
A four put is not a gimme even to me
Inside the leather is understandable.
Better players tend to make me play better though, they don't shake me,but light a fire.

I'm not a slow player by any means. This is why it irks me. Why do we have to hurry up when we're right behind the group in front of us? I just don't understand those people.
Oh yes, all it takes is someone to be vocal about how poorly they are playing and I soon join them. This never seems to work the other way around though...
The only one's I really mind are slow players. I like to play quickly. Get to the ball and hit it. Slow play is terrible. Especially now so many people have lines on their golf balls and continually readjust them and still miss it by 3 feet.
Now that I'm older and hitting it shorter, 230-240 off the tee, I enjoy playing with people that hit it past me all day. I usually drive them nuts by hitting most greens and getting up and down when I don't hit the green. Especially if we are playing for money.
