Practice Balls

I have long wondered if the distance I hit a practice ball at a driving range is comparable to the distance I hit a better ball, say a Titlelist NXT Tour?

I see practice balls with green letters, black letters, etc and I see some practice balls labeled as soft core, what if anything does this mean with respect to distance?

My driver clubhead speed is 95 to 100 mph and my typical six iron carry using a good golf ball is 160 yards.

Thanks for any explanations.

Re: Practice Balls

Unless you're at a very good public course or most country clubs, range balls are just that - range balls. They're designed to not travel as far. As to how they're designed, I don't know.

Re: Practice Balls

The most basi sort of range ball, and the ones that my home course uses, are just a solid one piece ball. Most of the ones we have are yellow Top Flites. When it gets too cold, they will sometimes break into pieces when you hit them.

All I do when I'm on the range is work on swing and general ball flight. I get my distances on the course using real balls.

I know for sure I drive longer on courses than on the range. Dunno if it's 100% the balls though

Re: Practice Balls

My course, and most around here, use range balls that go about the same distance as a regular ball when new. But the problem is at my home course half of the balls don't have dimples!

Re: Practice Balls

I usually drive about 10-20 yards further on the course.

I played a course in Palm Springs, CA and the range balls were brand new
ProV1's. I could not believe it! They went the same distance as my playing balls
since they were ProV1s also.

Re: Practice Balls

Range Balls definitely do not go as far. Or perhaps they can only go a maximum distance ?
I have a good idea on how far I hit my short to mid irons by work on the range.
When I get to long irons and woods, I always appear to come up 10 -20 yards short of my normal distance.
The Driver is the worst. I know I can hit 300 yard drives but at my range the back fence is only 240 yards away and I cannot for love or money hit it halfway up. That tells me for sure that the balls are inferior.

How can they keep those balls on the range? People would probably steal them...

Your caddy is with you from the practice tee thru hole # 18 so if you wanted
to take some it would really be impossiblle. It really is nice to look down
at those Pro V1's and you can hit as many as you want to. It is unlimited.
