Whats the worst course you have ever played?Me not one in particular but ill tell you the kind of course i hate very poorly taken care of par 3 courses.
a place called Bayou Oaks, in Sulphur, La........the fairways, if you can call them that b/c there was no distinction b/w fairway & rough, had antpiles all over and the grass looked like something growing in a pasture.........i don't remember one tee box being level, lol....the one bunker on the entire course had gravel in it......and that brings me to the worst part of the course....the greens, lol, or the browns at this particular course......absolutely horrible, spots of "crab grass" growing all over were about the only grass on the greens.....they were honestly just mounds of packed dirt......and the sad thing is, is that the course had a nice layout/design.....just very poorly maintained
Just played it 2 weekends ago...Airport Golf Course...7 par 3's and 2 par 4's.
There also was no distinction between fairway and rough. Greens were brown with patches everywhere. Not taken car of at all. Has a driving range and the yardarge markers are barrels.
Only shot 5 over to LOL but 5 over on this course for someone who isn't good like me still doesn't mean much haha.
Northwestern Louisiana State University RecComplex golf course. When I went to college there it was 9 holes, now it is 18. I still play there several times a year because it is the only course close to Nnatchitoches, La that is a public course. I play there when we go to visit my Father-in-law. Very poorly kept, the greens are like shag carpet and the bunkers are clay. Up on top of the hill (front 9) very sparse grass in the the fairways and the rough is all red clay. Down the hill (back 9) decent fairway grass but the rough is weeds and clover (give up finding your ball in the clover patches). The only good thing about it, it is cheap and I love playing with my wife father.
Come to think of it, the local course here used to be 18 holes when I was in middle school/junior high...its now a 9 hole Par 3 course...longest is 116 from back tee's....greens are artificial turf...pretty wicked
I have never thought about it that way...but I do have one in mind....
....Sunny Brook near Akron Ohio ....
....the new nine now 20 years old still has unfinished fairways, with mud stones, weeds, but no fairway turf......
Ponkapaog #1 in Canton, MA . It is a beautiful Donald Ross course that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has just let go to H eee double two sticks. It opened for play in 1938.
I've played it and you can see the beauty of the design, and the challenge of the holes. But the greens, tee boxes and fairways are an absolute mess. What a shame. This course could be a stellar showpiece if it was taken care of. There was even talk a few years ago of getting it up to par (pun intended), and that it would be a possible US Open venue.
The worst I've ever played was also one of the nicer ones I've ever played. We've been going down to Ormond Beach nearly every year for the past 20 years. I've played Tomoka Oaks just about every year. This past year, they went through a severe drought period and completely lost their greens. They gave me a $5 discount on the greens fees because their greens were "a little spotty". The municipality wouldn't let them use enough water to save the course. Because hardly anyone was playing, they were taking the opportunity to build new ponds, etc. and had pretty well let the fairways grow rampant too.
Supposedly the place has been completely renovated. I'll find out when we go in June.
A course near Bowling Green KY, can't remember the name. It was several years ago so hopefully they have gotten their act together. $20 on a Sunday afternoon should have told us what to expect...couldn't find our shots if they landed in the fairway no distinction between either etc...did try to create a signature island green on the 18th. This day however there was something dead on the green near the hole, nice maintenence crew.
Chastain Park in Atlanta back in the 70s when it was just let go. I believe someone bought it and later fixed it up. It had alot of potential but the condition was deplorable.
Two of the par 3 courses on Oahu were some of the worst I've played. Some of the putting surfaces are just unplayable. On the bright side, one of the par 3 courses has lights so you can play at night. Tough to see but it's fun getting out there with friends.
In terms of 18 hole courses, I would have to say it's a toss up between a municipal called Ted Makalena Golf Course and a private course called Hawaii Country Club (Kunia).
Don't take my story as gospel but I think the owner of the plot of land at Kunia designed the course himself. I think the problem is, he didn't have the infrastructure or funds to move a lot of dirt around so he basically built the course to go with the natural slope of the hills. Makes for a lot of "interesting" holes.
As for Ted Makalena, I just don't think they put much money into it. It does have a lot of personality though because it is right off of Pearl Harbor where the battleship graveyard is. On some holes, you have pretty good views of "dead" battleships. Also, one time when I was playing there, I noticed there were a lot of people at one of the adjacent houses. Had to be at least a hundred. They were having illegal cock fights there.

Back in the 70s, ALL of the Atlanta city owned courses were garbage. Many still are. The city finally turned them over to a professional management company. They're all much better now, but still below most of the other daily fee courses in the area. Chastain (North Fulton) is actually a pretty nice course now. Head and shoulders above the rest of the city owned courses.
Sail Ho
A par 3 course next to the Naval Base in San Diego. This is where Sam Snead was assigned to during his time in the service. So much for fighting for your country heh!
Check out the link it is one of the oldest courses in America built by Mr. Spalding himself and I see they did a recent remodel. So I might go there just for kicks soon. Sail Ho Golf Course
