I'm picking up golf again and I noticed that I really appreciate the course more and play better when I walk. However, my wife and father in law (who is a member of prestigious country club in the area) ride everytime we play.
Do you prefer to walk or ride and if you got the time state the reasons why?
I'd rather walk, but my feet just don't like it much any more. I can walk 9, but 18 just cripples me. I use a 3 wheel cart when I have my full bag, but on days like today, I go minimalist.... just 8 clubs and my old dependable Sun Mountain stand bag. Amazingly, I shoot the same scores with 8 clubs as I do with 14...
I prefer to walk, but I am not a snob about it. If the group I am with would rather ride, I will. I ran into an old friend on the course the other day. He rides always, but we hooked up after the first tee so I was walking and he was riding for 18.
At the end, he was more tired than I. Note he does carry a little (a lot) more around the waist than I.
Part of the sport for me is the exercise or athleticism.
When I walk I won't let them pair me up with people in carts. Not only do you have to chase them down but everytime I went to hit my ball they were in front of me. Lol I did rattle one off their Cart before I could make them understand that I wasn't a good idea.

I prefer to ride because I generally play 36 holes when I go out. I also play better riding because I never have to feel I am holding any one up and then start rushing up to the ball and hitting. All it takes is one group of walkers generally to jam up a course. Not all walkers are slow but the majority are. I've played a bunch of different courses and it seems to follow a pattern. I've even played with some excellent scratch golfers but I even find myself normally having to wait a considerable time on them. If a person is out for a relaxing day at the course with friends it is fine as long as if they hold people up then they allow them through. Enough of this I'm playing at a reasonable pace to finish in 4-4 1/2 hours. There is one course here I love to play but won't go there any more because they have a ton of retired walkers that make a round go 5 1/2 hours if you're lucky. They are out with their buddies and just having a good ole time but they are clogging up the course and making it terrible for everyone else. I made a comment to the pro shop and they just said, Oh well! It is a large group that seem to play on mondays on my day off from the shop and not sure if they play other days as well. So I guess the management looks at the steady income as being more important than pace of play. What gets me is the course is the only one in the center of the city and would stay full anyway. They seem to be losing a lot of players like myself and it would seem that they would get less revinue because of not being able to get as many people through in one day. Sorry to rant, but this hit on one of my pet peeves.
I usually walk when I play 9 holes, and ride 18. I play better when I walk, and I presume that it is better for me.
I really need to get back into shape, as I don't have the stamina to walk 18 anymore.
Agreed. Walk for 9 holes. Anything after that, I take a pull cart. I realized that my back starts to bother me from walking 18 holes (slipped a disc in my lower back years ago).

Re: Ride or Walk??
Walk 9, but for competition or 18 holes riding helps keep things moving and my mind off the pressure of the game...walking give me way too much time to think of all of the negatives...

Haha, that's great.
For me, I would really prepare to walk but down here in florida it's not possibly everyone rides. bunch of lazy 60 year olds, I used to walk 18 holes in colombia at the age of 7 so i can sure do it now, I do prefer the exercise, and it's much more relaxing. It would prolly help my game, because while i walk i could relax after a bad shot and make the next one a great one.
WALK! Healthier, Cheaper, Play Better, Just as fast when Course is full. Also if you're paired with a "Military Golfer", you don't spend your day touring the woods.
