Smile New to Golf - Please Help

Hello,
I started playing golf at the very beginning of April and I have taken four lessons so far over the past month or so. I try to play a few times a week and I try to go to the range at least every other day. With all of this being said, I am trying to get a better understanding of what is a scoring goal for me to achieve by the end of the summer. I have yet to break 100 and my current best score is a 107 with a 49 being my best score for nine holes. I was hoping I would see more consitancy and better scores over time but I am getting a little frustrated. Please give me a better idea of what my expectations should be and please feel free to tell me about your own stories of when you started and how long it took you to hit in the 90s consistantly. Sorry for the length and thanks in advance...

Eric

49 is great score for someone playing less than a year. Your score may even climb for a bit as you learn more and try differant things. Don't worry about your score for now just try to make solid contact and learn course management.

yeah i agree with bob there. ur not gonna shoot very consistent rounds untill u develope ur game to a level thats comfortable to u. especially with u being new to the game As far as goals go i wouldnt go out and set a goal for the end of summer. Golf is stressful enough without a personal milestone hanging over your head that u wanna reach by a certain time. u may want to set minor goals that can be achieved in one day on the course. hit so many greens in regulation, hit so many fairways, have so many putts, etc. u may want to think about setting 9 hole scoring goals since ur a beginner. cause even the experienced golfers out there knows that it is hard to play consistently good throughout the entire 18. i speak from experince. u set those types of goals for urself and ur scores will come down. o.....and one last thing..... enjoy the game cause ur scores wont come down if ur frusteration is on the rise

As a beginner, you are doing very well. Anything near 100 for the first year is fine.

If you want to bring that score down, it's all from 150 yards and closer. As a beginner your important score is not the total, it's how many strokes did you take to get into the hole from 150 and in. Your goal is 3 strokes. Once you can do that with consistency, you're on your way to sub 90 rounds.

You're doing terrific for your first year (I won't admit my scores and I'm in my second year! ).

Like other posters have mentioned - concentrate on your short game and course management (strategy) to lower scores.

You're doing very well. I dont totally agree with setting goals that dont pressure you, You want pressure, you should learn to thrive on pressure, fast and early. Currently im averaging in the 90s and 100s, and i need to get down to the high 80s by august 6 to enter the high school team, frustration gets to me but i dont care, I like the pressure i put on myself. I agree that working on your short game is very important. 100-150 yds in it's where it's all at.

Welcome to the greatest, most frustrating, most rewarding sport there is!

However, for most golfers the word "consistency" is an oxymoron.

This game requires a great amount of patience and discipline...and please, don't be too hard on yourself if you play well one day and struggle the next. That's golf. Even the pros can have 10 shot swings from one day to the next.

Go with what you've got and do your best. You can't ask anymore from yourself.

And again, welcome to golf!
