I agree that a sports psychologist will help with the meltdowns. But maybe an instructor can help with course management so that your son can minimize the risky shots that might be causing the meltdowns.
Do any of these instructors have a program whereby you just simply play 18 holes with the instructor? (fairly new to golf so I don't know). I think this would be helpful.

I will say this...he has gotten better about having the meltdowns. They still happen, but instead of getting "it back" by the next hole, he'd drag them along along with him for 3 holes. Now he can have a bogey and go to the next hole and par it, or better.
I'm not sure what causes the meltdowns. But if I had to guess, it's those risky shots that fail.

Smart golf doesn't always enter his brain, heck sometimes I think he checks his brain at the door during tourneys. He has played many rounds with his pro and that certainly has helped. But we live in Northern AL and his pro will be heading down to FL, soon, for four to five months for the winter to get ready for his upcoming season. I've done a bit of looking for a sports psychologist but I haven't been having much luck.
He loves this game with such a passion, and I really just want him to have fun and of course be able to walk off the course and be proud. Whether he won or not isn't the point.
