David Leadbetter

Pros or cons for sending a kid off to him for a week. My kid is at the point he needs more mental strength and course management. The game is there, no I don't expect him to turn pro, but I do want to give him every possibility that he can excel at this sport. He'll be going into 11th grade this year, he's on the varsity team but he will sometimes have meltdowns on the course during tourneys.

So will Davids people help him, or should I send him to Bob Rotella for some sports physic stuff? His choice...it's his Christmas present. Thoughts?

First of all parent of the year, I think its great that you are willing to do this for your son.

From what you described I would say sport psychologist.

That's what my hubby is saying also. He has a pro so we'd hate for the Leadbetter people to change his swing. I wonder how one goes about finding a golf sport psychologist?

And thanks for the compliment but I have had my days of wanting to wrap a club around his neck.

Re: David Leadbetter

Just curious, what causes the meltdowns during tourneys?

I agree that a sports psychologist will help with the meltdowns. But maybe an instructor can help with course management so that your son can minimize the risky shots that might be causing the meltdowns.

Do any of these instructors have a program whereby you just simply play 18 holes with the instructor? (fairly new to golf so I don't know). I think this would be helpful.

I will say this...he has gotten better about having the meltdowns. They still happen, but instead of getting "it back" by the next hole, he'd drag them along along with him for 3 holes. Now he can have a bogey and go to the next hole and par it, or better.

I'm not sure what causes the meltdowns. But if I had to guess, it's those risky shots that fail. Smart golf doesn't always enter his brain, heck sometimes I think he checks his brain at the door during tourneys. He has played many rounds with his pro and that certainly has helped. But we live in Northern AL and his pro will be heading down to FL, soon, for four to five months for the winter to get ready for his upcoming season. I've done a bit of looking for a sports psychologist but I haven't been having much luck.

He loves this game with such a passion, and I really just want him to have fun and of course be able to walk off the course and be proud. Whether he won or not isn't the point.

Re: David Leadbetter

If he has a solid fundamental game, which it sounds like he does, I would go with a sports psychologist. Bobby Jones said the most important distance in golf is the "5-inches between your ears".

Good luck!

Yeah his handi is a 4.3 so it's not his game per say...I do think it's that brain of his. Thanks for the support.

Re: David Leadbetter

Wow what great parents. Are you only looking to adopt one other? I promise to provide my own car and pay for insurance myself.
I don't know if I am allowed to make recommendations on this forum so if you want to send me a private message I can give you details of a program that will help him without it costing an arm and a leg.

Sure you are...just mention the program without links and interested parties can investigate on their own.
