A friend and me were playing yesterday and the course threw a single with us. 40ish age guy, very nice, was actually fun to be with. Well, around the 11th or 12th hole he started really getting angry at the group in front of us for slow play. So at the 14th tee, he blurts out "I can't take these A holes anymore" and proceeds to tee up a ball while they're still well within distance. He then hits it and it sails right over the cart of one of them and barely misses. After which yelling reall loud "get moving or I'll send another".
My friend and I were a bit stunned and unsure what to do. Fortunately everything mellowed after that and there was nothing more of it. But such an incident could have easily turned much worse, especially if he would have hit one of them.
Has anyone else ever been in such a situation and/or any suggestions on the best way to handle something like that. Of course it's always easy after the fact, we were rather taken off guard when it happened.
I think I would have left.....it's hard to say if I would have tried to stop him or just stood there in disbelief while he did it. I definetely would have asked him what the **** he was doing...
Pulled a very dumb stunt , advanced past the golfer hitting. I was about 30 yards to the left of my son, when he caught one off the toe to the club, the ball came hopping and skipping straight across at me (never seen it coming). Well it put my lights out for 30 seconds or so, I ended up with a lump on the side of my head and a headache for the rest of the round. Let me tell you that little white ball hurts big time, Hitting a ball into the group in front of you is just plain irresponsible and damned right dangerous, its not going to improve your lot in any way, and you stand a better then average chance of getting your lights put out in a more conventional way. The course isnt going anywhere, it will be there 30 seconds from now... use your head.
That's pretty darn dangerous. A golfer who is an accurate shot can kill someone. And an incident that blatant could end up in court.
Now here is the question. Suppose he had hit someone. Caused an injury. The ambulance comes out, and the marshall rides up to your group and says "who hit that?"
now what? you tell them the TRUTH. If you hurt someone, you are liable for their injury and all of the consequences for their injury. Do you think when you yell "FORE" you are doing it for their benefit or your benefit?
I would be just as upset as the guys that he hit into and would have let him have it (verbally) then kicked him out of the group...no excuse for a warning shot...
Unacceptable! He would be gone and reported to the Marshal, Pro, Club Manager, or whoever needs to know. I'm pretty sure he would get a manslaughter charge should that ball have made lethal contact. As my son would say... Daddy he's bad.
I would've knocked his ball off the tee before he could swing. There is no way I would have allowed that especially b/c he was thrown into the group as a walk on. Slow play happens; call the ranger if it's that bad, but never, ever, intentionally hit into someone. As it was pointed out, it not only hurts quite a bit, but could kill.
i have to say that i cant stand to play behind people like that...not making excuses but i swear when i have to wait at every shot it ****** my whole round up...now i have never hit into anyone but me and a buddy where playing behind this one group for 16 ******* holes and they let the group originally in front of us go through but not us and we were just a twosome...needless to say 16 is a straight away par five and they were out of our range but we both dropped about 8 balls apiece towards there general area just to let them know we were there after waitin all day
There is no excuse for firing a golf ball at someone, even if the odds are slim that you'll hit anyone. I hate slow play as much as anyone, but to get that angry is absurd. Sounds like the guy had bigger issues going on in his life than slow play on a golf course.
Totally unacceptable on the basis of risk. Shouting at them would have been bad manners but perfectly justified in this case. Hitting a ball intentionally at them is an attempt to cause bodily harm and I imagine may well be criminally prosecutable even without actual bodily harm. Had he hit them, I imagine he could well be opening himself not only to massive financial pain but very possibly to jail time.
I probably run into more pokies than I do faster players. I don't have a problem what goofy routines a person uses or how long they take as long as they aren't holding up play. I ran into two same scenerios monday and just went around and came back to play the holes later.
