What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
After reading a few posts where people were summarizing their stats for the season, it got me thinking…what part of your game could you improve to move on to the next (lower) scoring plateau? Apart from overall improvement in all areas, is there one part of your game that you can point to that is an obvious improvement opportunity?
In my own game I have made forward progress this year in all areas, dropping from a 14 handicap to a 6, but the ones that have been most critical have been driving accuracy and distance, 3 wood (can actually use one now!) putting, bunker play and fairway approaches…for me to move forward I need to work on day to day consistency, approaches, working it left to right and putting…if I had to pinpoint one specific area it would be my mid and long iron accuracy…sharpen that and I ought to see a scoring difference.

Consistently getting my first shot in play. If I can play from the fairway, I can usually get in w/no more than bogey. Even an occasional double does not frost me like losing the tee shot/taking an unplayable etc. Already in the hole score wise and not close to the green. Now that frosts me!
Re: What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
Like dvldog said, I too need to keep my drives in play. I have greatly improved my short game and putting. I can sink most in two putts and if I get it close (8ft or so) I have a really good shot at a 1 putt. My distance game also needs work, but I'll take accuracy over distance any day. My goal this year is to break 95 before it snows. Next year, I want to be in the mid 80s by the end of the season.

I have been working on hitting em straight -- that goes for all my clubs. Also specifically working on a more consistent bunker shot to actually get onto the green, not just out on the fringe. Lots of chipping drills using different clubs including hybrid when appropriate. Oh, and working on putting... lots of putting practice. Hmmm... did I leave anything out?

Definitely off the tee and alignment. Mid to short game is OK, but I'm hitting it off the course too often....usually as a result of poor alignment. (At least the majority of those shots are well struck )
Re: What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
Almost all of what I have read above, which ='s a little bit of everything. But I will say 2 things which is still against the rules.
Longer off the tee. (I am almost always in play, but am usually the back guy in the pack)
Keeping my mind in the game.It takes almost nothing for my mind to wander, and resulting in a bad shot or missed putt.
Re: What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
My wedge play needs to get better. I think I'll switch from a 54 and 60 to a 52 and 58. I need to put myself in position to one putt, rather than these 25 footers I always seem to have.
Re: What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
Refining my swing. I finally learned to swing from the inside and can see it influencing all aspects of my game, even chipping and putting. I just need to tweak the few little kinks left and get use to the all the changes.
Re: What piece is missing to raise your game to the next level?
This is a cool thread.
I need consistency, no doubt about it. The biggest discouragement I have in golf is not being able to repeat the great shots. I have all the shots, I just don't execute all the time. I know how to pull of the shot I need, it's a matter of getting the body to do what the mind already knows. There's nothing worse than carving a beautifully shaped shot into a tight spot and then double-crossing the tee shot on the next hole into an OB or water hazard. Or hitting a Tour caliber, bomb drive and then shanking a 9-iron. That's my curse.
If I could execute the shot I plan (and am capable of executing), I would shoot no worse than par considering I don't play extremely difficult courses. I am an average putter for my handicap, so there's plenty of room for me to improve on the greens.
Mentally, I'm 100%. I can stay cool as ice after missing a short putt or hitting a poor shot. Physically, I am strong, healthy and blessed with swing speed for my body size.
What's missing in my game is hard to attain. I've been trying to improve for 10 years and aside from the normal ups and downs, peaks and valleys, I haven't succeeded. There's nothing more discouraging than that, for sure. But, I keep plugging away. Maybe some day...
