Have you ever used golf for business? What was your experience?
Being a golf pro at various clubs I saw a lot of business relationships develop on the course. I was often brought in to the foursome to alleviate the tension of the day.
Yes, it can be challenging if you are trying to impress someone, but that's the case in golf in all situations. The point of doing business golf is to create a lasting relationship that builds repore. If you are brand new at the game you have a few options: 1) get some (professional) lessons beforehand so you feel comfortable, 2) be honest that you are a new golfer, or 3) suggest a scramble format.
Did you know that nearly 90% of Fortune 500 CEO’s, play golf? Not only is it a legitimate write off, but you get an incredible upper edge from those who stay in the office when an invitation comes your way.
If your clients and prospects play, then you need to be out on the course with them. It is important to understand how the game of golf can help you develop your business, as well as benefit you personally.

As a retailer, I've played golf with wholesalers more as a way of getting to know them than to close a deal of any kind. I think it's always good to build relationships with the people that work for you or with you. The golf course, I've found, is a good place to do that. Some of those wholesalers have become very good friends and frequent golf partners.
IMHO....If Golf is your passion and you have a client, prospect, customer, or account whose passion is also Golf........NOTHING, brings about a better return on investment, than treating that person to a round of Golf at a great course, a couple of drinks, and lunch or dinner!
Thumbs up to all of this. I believe there is more business done on the golf course than most offices. If you have a customer or potential customer, it is much easier to open up over a round of golf than in a conference room. Human nature causes people to hold things in or build up a wall. There is something about the golf course that breaks that barrier down. If you dont use this tactic, start to, it will pay you dividends.
Oh yeah, one more point, like the pro said, if you are not very good or are embarrased to show of your skills, form a best ball type match or scramble format to take the pressure off the individual.
Thanks for your replies. You would be amazed at how many people get invited to play golf with a potential client and won't go, (especially women). It does not matter the level of golf you play to, that's not the point. You will miss out on potential business and deals if you turn down a golden opportunity for business golf.
It would be great to hear stories any of you have had that boosted your business using golf. It will help those who are thinking about it.
For those of you who would like a great relaxation tool before you go play, you can find one here: FREE 10' HYPNOSIS SESSION

When I had my mortgage company, I took a couple people out to play golf and also got taken out as well ( From lenders and Title companies )
It was great!! I wasn't into it really as much as now, wish I was though.
Being able to play golf for business ? I personally think it is great to be able to. To me, work and play at the same time is a blessing.
In my experiences, it removes the tension between relationship when on a golf course, compared to a boardroom in the office. Good for conversation and building relationship.
I checked "No" in the poll because I don't "do" business at the course. I do, however work part time there, so I guess you could stretch it to mean that....
We have a corporate membership at a nice course here and 2~3 out of 4 fridays a month, we take someone out who give us work.
Also we get taken out be suppliers once a month!
Is it great for business, get to talk in a relaxed atmosphere and its more a socialble chat about work and i find people are more open then if we were talking over the phone etc
Other great thing is a day off work getting paid to play :)
If you have read some of these posts and are thinking you would love to use golf for business, here are three things you need to do.
1) Start putting your mind on what you want vs what you don't want.
2) Think of clients asking you to play in an outing with them.
3) Picture your self on the golf course with business associates
Begin with the end in mind. Focus on what you want to happen. Do you want to be an observer or a participant? It's a choice! Learn The Inner Game of Leadership
I meet a lot of people on the course, some of whom end up being my clients. Some of whom I decline to represent because their character, as revealed on the course, shows I don't want them as clients. Existing clients are great to play with as a way of just getting away from business and solidifying existing friendships. All good. PLAY MORE GOLF!
