Does anyone else do this?
I'm contemplating getting one of those extremely light (2 lb) carry bags and occasionally playing with a pared-down set. I'm thinking practice working different yardages with clubs under game conditions and good walking time without too much strain on the back.
Some of the configurations I've thought of: - Driver, 3, 5, 7, 9, Gap, Lob, Putter
- Driver, Hybrid, 4, 6, 8, PW, Sand, Putter
- 8, 9, PW, Gap, Lob, Sand, Putter (for the nearby par three course)
- 3W, 3, 5, 7, 9, Gap, Lob, Putter (for shorter, tighter courses where driver is just to much club)
I really don't see how it can miss as a shot-making exercise, so I'm curious who else has tried it and how were the results.

Re: Does anyone else do this?
I do it in the summer months, far better than carrying a heavy bag. sometimes i take odd number irons other times even, never take my woods,my hybrid is the longest club i take,i think i have tried every permutation i can think of,but its a good excercise in shot making.

Re: Does anyone else do this?
This summer, when even a pull cart can get tiresome (my back doesn't allow carrying a full bag for a whole round), I did this a few times. My buddy gave me a bag that doesn't even weigh a pound. I usually carried driver, hybrid, 8 iron, PW, SW, LW and putter.

Re: Does anyone else do this?
i do this all the time. i usually play with members at the course where i work and i don't walk then, but when i play by myself i take 6 or 7 clubs and my small bag. like merlin said, it's one of the best ways to learn how to hit different types of shots with all your clubs. you can also fit all your clubs in the bag (which might get you a few weird looks) i have done this at tournaments at harder to walk courses and it works fine. not much room besides the bare essentials though.

Re: Does anyone else do this?
I must admit I use a cart. I've found a cheap one with wheels AND legs so I only carry my clubs when I lift them out of the trunk
I can recommend that but of course I'm the kind of girl who's sure that I can't go to a course without the "full package". Apart from that I think your parred down sets sound quite reasonable. And less strain on your back is a very good ides. If I had to carry mine, I'd probably do the same as you!
