Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
How many penalty strokes will I get?
Being a new golfer I had a half set as my first set. Those clubs where not treated nicely so I had some of them in my bag as "rescue" clubs. Clubs I would use in the woods or with lies where I could damage my new clubs.
Thing is, I counted these a month ago, and realized I had 15. I took one out the bag and thought I had 14. Played the tournament Wednesday and I never thought of the idea that I had to many clubs in my bag. Obliviously I must have added more of my older clubs without knowing it, because when I looked in the bag yesterday there where 16, and not 14.
Ironically this was my first stableford tournament wich I won but I have let the club know what happened so I'm going to get a penalty. I read somewhere that you can in one round get a maximum of 4 points (not strokes, due the stableford) penalty on the rule of too many clubs, is this correct?
Man it sucks to call a penalty on yourself when you won, and even though I didn't use any of those rescue clubs part from one of em, I feel the need to tell them.
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
The first thing is calling the penalty on yourself is the correct thing to do always. At golf's core are values of honesty, being a gentleman, and fair play. In a competition, since someone can not monitor each individual playing at all times, it is assumed that every one will do the right thing. Should you knowingly try to get away with something less, your reputation would suffer great harm both on an off the course amongst your friends and fellow golfer's.
That said, I feel the penalty for playing a complete round with too many clubs would probably be more substantial than what you think unless there were some local rules for your competition in effect.
Good luck, you will at least know you did the right thing.

I think you will be disqualified. If it were me I would just DQ myself and leave it as a lesson learned. I don't think the 4 point math is correct, but don't play a ton of stableford's either.
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
It should be a DQ because too low a score was turned in. If you had noticed just before turning in your score, would be a 4 stroke penalty, although I'm not sure how that works in stableford ... probably 2 strokes add to each of your first 2 holes.
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
like QuadrupleEagale said. you should get DQ. in the high school rules we play.you will but the Rules Of Golf does say if you play the first 2 holes with 15 or more clubs you will get 2 penalty strokes on each of the holes.so you will end up with 4 penalty strokes

Since I have not played any tournaments before and don't know hands down all the rules I just told them what happened and said I would take the "penalty" so I guess they would do it for me. Weather that means DQ or loss of strokes doesn't matter as far as lesson learned, either way I won't win the the round that I actually won and either way a lesson is learned.
When I get the verdict I will ask them if a DQ is not the proper punishment if they tell me something different. No hassle.
But I won't cal them and say: Come on, please DQ me!! I will ask them when I get the message if DQ is not the right thing to do.
Litlle sad though, Ive already gotten some olders guys as my fans, they will be disappointed
What stuns me the most is my playing buddies. 4 out of 5 responded like this when I said I turned my self in: " WHY???"
Oh my lord, because I wan't to be honest maybe? Ever heard of honesty?? Made me a little mad when I felt I had to explain why I wanted to be honest. Are we all just a bunch of liars??
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
Just sent a text message to my local pro and asked if DQ was not the right thing since I returned a score card that was wrong. He said yes and stated that I showed great integrity and was the "moral" winner (not sure how this expression goes in english.
I actually don't care anymore. I played very well and could have done even better. So I got the feedback I needed. And with my enthusiasm I know I will put myself in position to win that tournament many more times.
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
I don't know why you have the need to answer me like that, can you tell me?
Since it was my first tournament and if you have payed attention you should have noticed what level I play at, I have no plans at making golf pay the bills.
Re: Won a tournament but discovered I had to many clubs!
I think you did the correct thing and applaud you for your honesty and willingness to play by the rules. Regardless of what the tournement board says or does you still come out a winner.

I guess we all have played in what everyone calls"cheater scrambles". Which pretty much refer to all of them. If there is money on yhe line, I would just leave it alone. Ive played in many scrambles, where the 20 under score was impossible even if there were a team of 4 tiger wood on it. Now You didnt say anything bout cash, nor it wasnt a scramble, but stillan extra club that wasnt used or known about is no big deal.

Like you said, your not on the PGA Tour.
Sure am glad I don t play golf with you. It was a tournament, he broke a rule, he didn't realize it soon enough to just take the penalty, so he is disqualified. Painful lesson. Returning a correct scorecard is so integral to the game of golf that you can't just dismiss it that way and still consider yourself a golfer. You are saying that it's ok to cheat, as long as there is money on the line????? I find myself speechless, mostly that anyone would actually admit to being so morally bankrupt that he can't even see the wrong in such an act.
Max Iron is a golfer in every sense of the word, not to mention a man of integrity, and I'd be happy to play with him any time, any place.
HabanoHal on the other hand would be quite unwelcome in any group of golfers I've ever played with.
