Dead Solid Perfect--this also is the best golf movie I have ever seen, it puts Tin Cup to shame. It was made by HBO and only released on HBO. Man, I wish someone would put this out in DVD. It starred Randy Quaid as a struggling PGA tour player. Funny and great golf. It is ironic, because Randy Quaid was also in the worst golf movie ever made, Caddyshack II. I met John Daly at a Tom Petty concert in Phoenix just a few months after he won the PGA. We started talking golf and I asked him if he had seen this movie. He said, "Of course, it's the second best golf movie ever made, after CaddyShack!" Which is my number two.
Caddyshack--I bought the DVD, what a classic!
Tin Cup--because it was a sincere effort at a golf movie, and too few of them are made.
Happy Gilmore--hilarious!
I have a feeling most of the posts in this thread will mention at least one of these movies.
I haven't seen the 1st one you mentioned but I did see a movie a few months back. Can't remember the name of it. But it was about a Kid who had a pure swing. He hooked up with an ex-golf pro (Played by Gary Sensise)sp. It was more than just about golf but it was really good.
Caddyshack is so great it deserves it's own thread. Happy Gilmore? C'mon, it's a good movie to be sure, but NOTHING compares to the greatness of Caddyshack. You know a movie is great when lines from it are part of daily life. Noonan!
Happy Gilmore (being from canada is has 2 great sports involved!!)
Caddyshack
and i guess tin cup, but that had to be the worst ending in the world, i hated it....
Yeah, here's another vote for Caddyshack. I didn't watch Dead Solid Perfect so I have no idea whether I'd like that movie or not but it definitely sounds like one to check out. I didn't even bother watching Caddyshack 2 because I figured it had no chance of standing up to the first. Did anyone watch Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius?

I once asked Jonathan Silverman what it was like to work with Jackie Mason in Caddyshack 2. His reponse? "So you're the guy who saw that movie..."
I saw "Dead Solid Perfect" once, and loved it, but was never able to catch it again. Hopefully it will pop up again sometime.
No doubt about Caddyshack. I was surprised that it only came in at #5 on ESPN's top 25 sports movies of the last 25 years tonight. Though its hard to argue with the 4 that came in ahead of it (Hoosiers, Raging Bull, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams).

Where was Hoop Dreams on that list? It's one of my favorite sports movies of all time. Not really the kind of movie that you pop in and watch casually unless you have about 4+ hours to spare but I still love it.

They had three major rules for qualification:
1) Had to debut in Sept. 1979 or later
2) Couldn't be a 2004 release
3) No documentaries.
I don't know why they did it that way, certainly there aren't that many documentaries that are memorable enough to clog the list, and the few good ones out there could have taken the place of "Bend it Like Beckham" or "Searching for Bobby Fischer", for sure. Don't know why "Hoop Dreams" was considered a documentary, yet "61*" and some of the others weren't.
I movie (havn't a hope of recalling the title or actors) vaguely remember seeing at a sunday night double feature at the local cinema was a direct rip-off of 'Jaws'. Except it was set on a golf resort and had a possessed reel mower in place of the great white.... in the so ridiculous it's hilarious category. There was a scene where the three heroes are sanding on a short tower above extremely long grass with three balloons (attached to the unseen mower) circling them.
Other than that I say my favourite is Caddy "You musta been something before electricity" Shack.
